High-flying Team India have the opportunity to reclaim the No.1 spot in the ICC Test Rankings if they can extend their winning run in the ongoing Test series against Australia. Ajinkya Rahane & Co. are brimming with confidence after defying all the odds to beat Australia in the second Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The win came after the humiliating defeat in the first Test at the Adelaide Oval. India were all out for 36 in the second innings of the series-opener as Australia thrashed them by 8 wickets to take the lead in the series. But the visitors bounced back in style in the second Test to win it by eight wickets and draw level in the four-match series.

India now have an opportunity to rise to the top of the Test rankings once again. The Ajinkya Rahane-led side can reclaim the top spot if they win the remaining two Tests and wrap up the series by a margin of 3-1. They can take the spot in the other scenarios too but in that case, they will have to depend on the result of the other Test series going on at the moment between Pakistan and New Zealand.

A 3-1 win will ensure that India leapfrog New Zealand to take the top spot without any other permutation and combination. New Zealand are currently at the top of the standings, followed by Australia and India. If the ongoing Border-Gavaskar series ends 2-1 in favour of India, they will have to depend on the New Zealand-Pakistan series. If Pakistan manage to draw or win the second Test against the Black Caps, India will move to the top.

Australia have a chance to reclaim the top spot too. If they manage to win the series against India, it will be enough for them to replace New Zealand as the top-ranked Test side. They could move to the top even if the series ends 1-1 or 2-2 but in that case, they need Pakistan to win the last Test against New Zealand.
