The Kandy side is led by Sri Lankan T0I skipper Wanindu Hasaranga. He is yet to make a statement as captain at the international level but has already won an LPL title with the Kandy side.

They beat Dambulla in last year's final to be crowned champions. The Lankan skipper will look to defend the title and is a key member of the side himself.

Dambulla Sixers

The franchise got embroiled in a controversy even before the start of the season. The Dambulla Aura was purchased by Imperial Sports Group, who renamed it Dambulla Thunders.

But later, LPL terminated the Dambulla Thunders contract, when its co-owner Tamim Rahman was arrested for match-fixing charges. Then Sequoia Consultants through DeSilva Holdings got ownership of the Dambulla franchise and renamed it Dambulla Sixers.

Pitch Conditions

Pallekele is among the better batting grounds in Sri Lanka. The average first innings score is around 170. This is the rainy season in Sri Lanka and thus we might have rain interruptions.

Dew is also going to play a key role in these games. The teams winning the toss might prefer chasing across the three venues in Pallekele, Dambulla, and Colombo. Pallekele will host the first five matches of the season.

Form and Fitness 

Several international players will play for all five franchises. Again, there is no Indian player in the LPL. However, there are players from Pakistan, Bangladesh, West Indies and New Zealand. Having recently played in the IPL, it will be interesting to see how many overseas players turn up for the first few games and whether there will be any availability issues.

It's an even contest between the two sides. Kandy who are the defending champions of the tournament might start favourites in the game. In nine games between the two sides so far, Kandy have won five games while Dambulla has four.

The five-team tournament will be played from July 1-21. 24 matches will be played across 21 days in the double round-robin format with the final scheduled on July 21 in Colombo.
