Former Pakistan skipper Babar Azam made his Big Bash League (BBL) debut for the Sydney Sixers against the Perth Scorchers in the ongoing season. However, the right-handed batter had a day to forget as he was dismissed for a single-digit score in the ongoing match at the Perth Stadium on Sunday, December 14.

The start of the clash was delayed by more than an hour. Notably, the weather forced officials to shorten the match to 11 overs per side once conditions improved. The Sydney Sixers stumbled early when play got underway. Daniel Hughes was dismissed for a duck in the opening over, leaving the visitors at 1-1.

Brody Couch removed the biggest name on the field, Babar Azam, in his very first spell. The former Pakistan captain never settled at the crease on his BBL debut, struggling with the extra bounce before mistiming a pull shot.

Babar tried to hit a short-of-a-length delivery, but the ball went high on the bat and ended up chipping a simple catch to Laurie Evans at mid-on. He walked off after scoring just 2 off 5 balls. The right-handed batter failed to make an impact on his BBL debut.

Moises Henriques Run Out After Babar Azam’s Early Exit

After Babar’s early dismissal, the Sydney Sixers suffered another setback when Moises Henriques was run out at the non-striker’s end in the fifth over of the innings.

The incident happened on the third delivery when Josh Philippe hit the ball straight back towards bowler Ashton Agar. Agar got a slight touch on the ball, and it then rolled onto the stumps.

Henriques was backing up too far and had no chance of getting back into his crease. He knew he was out and walked off without waiting for the umpire’s decision, leaving the Sixers at 36/3 in a rain-curtailed encounter.

“Not the way to go, but go he must,” Mark Howard said, as quoted by Fox Cricket.

Babar Azam’s Asia Cup Snub and Record-Breaking Return before BBL Debut

Before travelling to Australia to play in the Big Bash League for the first time, Babar Azam played in a T20I tri-series in Pakistan. He scored 127 runs in five matches during the tournament.

Babar was then left out of Pakistan’s squad for the 2025 Asia Cup, which was played in the UAE. Even without him, Pakistan reached the final under the captaincy of Salman Ali Agha but failed to win the title.

During the tournament, Pakistan faced India three times in Dubai and lost all three matches. Babar returned to Pakistan’s T20I team in October for the home series against South Africa. He broke Rohit Sharma’s record to become the highest run-scorer in international T20 cricket.
