Pakistan captain Babar Azam was the hot topic of discussion as PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi met former Pakistan legends. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has recently held a high-level meeting of former cricketers at a hotel on Mall Road in Lahore to gather insights and suggestions from experienced players to enhance the national cricket setup.
The meeting was chaired by PCB Chairman Mohsin Raza Naqvi. According to Cricket Pakistan, over fifteen former Test and international cricketers attended the meeting held by the PCB, and they came together to share a wide array of suggestions to improve Pakistan's cricket infrastructure and performance.
Former Pakistan players question Babar Azam's effectivity
Among the notable attendees were Salman Butt, Ijaz Ahmed, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Basit Ali, Intikhab Alam, Asim Kamal, Mohammad Sami, Shafiq Papa, Yasir Hameed, Saleem Altaf, Haroon Rasheed, Yasir Shah, Sikandar Bakht, Wajahatullah Wasti, and Azhar Khan.
A key issue raised during the meeting was the Pakistan cricket team's composition and selection strategy for the next ICC T20 World Cup. According to the reports, some former cricketers have expressed their concerns over the team combination, as they feel there are a lot of openers in the mix, leaving a shortage of reliable middle-order batters in the set-up.
They argued that Pakistan’s current selection committee’s selection strategy is flawed and has been affecting the national team's performance. Additionally, the frequent changes in captaincy were criticized by the former cricketers for contributing to the team's lack of stability, with many attendees advocating for a more consistent leadership approach on the side.
Fitness was another key area of focus during the high-profile meeting, with the former cricketers stressing the need to maintain high fitness standards to ensure consistent performance at the international level. Many have been criticizing the fitness level of the current Pakistani players.
Mohsin Naqvi promises to address all concerns raised by the former cricketer
Reacting to these concerns in the meeting, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi reportedly assured the former cricketers that the board would take strong steps to address their concerns. Naqvi also pledged to revamp Pakistan's domestic cricket structure and make necessary adjustments based on the valuable feedback received during the meeting.
Meanwhile, the PCB had also invited former Pakistan captains Javed Miandad and Rashid Latif, but they couldn’t attend the meeting. Javed Miandad could not attend the meeting due to his ill health, while Rashid Latif skipped the meeting due to prior commitments and apologized for the same.
Well, Naqvi, after the meeting, revealed that discussions covered various aspects of domestic cricket, with all participants providing excellent advice, emphasizing the focus on structural improvements and strategic planning for the future of Pakistan cricket.
On being asked by a journalist, “Will Babar Azam remain captain?” The PCB chief replied, “There has been no discussion on this yet.” Naqvi clarified that the focus of the meeting was primarily on structural improvements and strategic insights for the future of Pakistan cricket, not captaincy, which means Babar Azam’s white-ball captaincy is safe for now at least.
