The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on Saturday, October 4, surprised many by handing over the crucial opportunity to Shreyas Iyer ahead of the Australia tour. Amid the reports of Shreyas Iyer taking a break from Test cricket, the BCCI has shown full confidence in his leadership skills.
Actually, the BCCI has announced the ODI and T20I squads for the upcoming bilateral series in Australia on Saturday. The India National Cricket Team is scheduled to play three ODIs and five T20Is against Australia in October-November. They have retained the leadership for the T20Is.
Shubman Gill replaces Rohit Sharma as India's ODI captain ahead of the Australia tour
But the BCCI stunned the cricket fraternity by sacking Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI captain, as Shubman Gill was appointed the new captain ahead of the much-awaited Australia tour. Not just that, the Indian selection committee appointed Shreyas Iyer as India’s new ODI vice-captain.
However, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are both part of the ODI squad, but Ravindra Jadeja didn’t find a place in the 15-member squad for the much-anticipated Australia tour. On the other hand, Mohammed Siraj returned to the ODI squad, having last played in the format in August 2024.
Additionally, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Dhruv Jurel have been handed the maiden ODI call-ups as Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant are ruled out of the upcoming Australia tour. Notably, Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the ODIs after a hectic schedule, but he was named in the T20I squad for the Australia tour.
Shreyas Iyer named India’s new ODI Vice-Captain
Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer has been elevated as India’s vice-captain in ODI cricket. The decision was taken in the selection meeting attended by the newly appointed ODI captain, Shubman Gill. Iyer got the role after his impressive captaincy in the IPL and domestic cricket in white-ball cricket.
However, Iyer has never captained the Men in Blue in ODI cricket, but he is quietly building a reputation as one of the most successful leaders in modern cricket. His record across domestic tournaments and the IPL speaks for itself. Iyer holds a rare achievement in the IPL.
The stylish right-handed batter is the only captain to guide three different franchises—Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Punjab Kings—to the IPL finals. KKR won the IPL 2024 under the Mumbaiker’s captaincy. He has also been one of India's most consistent run-scorers in ODIs.
His domestic captaincy record is equally impressive. In List A cricket, he won 29 of 42 games as skipper. Even Iyer led Mumbai to a memorable Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title last year.
Here's how fans reacted to Shreyas Iyer's appointment as vice-captain:

Sarpanch 🏆🎉#Iyer #RohitSharma pic.twitter.com/Bzr1ui5bPL
I don't mind rohit as captain but if they indeed wanted to look at the future, Shreyas Iyer was the man. BCCI and their obsession to forcefully make Gill a multi format poster boy ugh. Iyer rightfully should be the white ball captain acc to me

Shreyas Iyer fans will get to see him leading Indian team in ODIs against South Africa at home, when Gill might rest.

If @imAagarkar looking for a future captain, Shreyas Iyer has proved it – led @KKRiders to an IPL title & took @PunjabKingsIPL to the final. Gill is yet to prove himself in limited formats.#ShreyasIyer #Captaincy #IndianCricket #ODICricket #T20Cricket #INDvsAUS #Cricket pic.twitter.com/KBj9T3ySFf

Rohit Sharma gave India 2 ICC trophies as captain, ended a decade-long drought, and built a fearless team. Instead of celebrating him, BCCI kicked him out — absolute disrespect.

If anyone deserves to lead after Rohit, it’s Shreyas Iyer — mature, proven, respected.

An arrogant and pathetic decision by BCCI. After this, can any player be loyal? They've destroyed careers like Shreyas Iyer & Ishan Kishan. Now, players will play for themselves, not the country. This is a shameful day for Indian cricket.

It's absolutely disgusting to watch @BCCI doing things like this.
— Sagar (@linkedin_park_) October 4, 2025
Shubman,no doubt is a really good ODI batsman. But when you have Shreyas Iyer, who's had so much success as a captain in Domestic seasons, you sidelined him?
And if Rohit himself has not stepped down, conspiracy h.
Shreyas iyer immediately said "No" 👀 https://t.co/kmbtt5cLRG

Shreyas Iyer should have been the successor of Rohit as an ODI captain.

Anyways.
Thank you Captain for a dream run. pic.twitter.com/T4t8o4fVoV
Shreyas Iyer should have been made the captain in the ODI format, but never mind — he still became the vice-captain.#Bcci #AustraliaTour #Odi #Shareyas pic.twitter.com/oKB2NVpgHY
