The Bangladesh National Cricket Team captain and the senior all-rounder, Shakib Al Hasan, bamboozled the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Mendis in the match No.2 of the Asia Cup 2023 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Thursday, August 31.

Chasing a small total of 165 runs, the Lankan wicketkeeper-batter failed to get going. He kept missing and defending the deliveries and finally got off the mark on his 15th ball on the 5th ball of the 7th over, which was bowled by pacer Taskin Ahmed.

He played more dot balls next, before hitting a four off Mustafizur Rahman’s 5th delivery of the 9th over. However, his stay in the middle ended in the very next over as the veteran all-rounder Shakib castled him with a beauty.

On the second ball of the 10th over, Shakib Al Hasan bowled an arm delivery from round the wicket and the wicketkeeper-batter expected the delivery to turn and played for it. However, the ball went through the gate and shattered his stumps. Mendis scored just 5 runs off 21 balls, before walking back to the hut.

As Shakib picked his first wicket of the match, he achieved a massive feat in One Day Internationals. He went past the New Zealand National Cricket Team legend Daniel Vettori to become the second-highest wicket-taker among left-arm spinners in ODI cricket.

Shakib with 306 wickets is only behind Sri Lanka National Cricket Team legend Sanath Jayasuriya, who bagged 323 wickets, in the elite list. The Bangladesh veteran has got the opportunity to go past Jayasuriya in the upcoming months as both the Asia Cup and World Cup are set to be played in sub-continent conditions where the pitches are often spin-friendly.
