On Tuesday, November 18, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced some interesting vice-captaincy appointments across formats in the Bangladesh National Cricket Team.
These massive changes in the leadership of the Bangladesh National Cricket Team across formats come ahead of the all-important ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, which will be played in India and Sri Lanka
Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Saif Hassan named Bangladesh vice-captains
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has decided to make some changes to the leadership group in T20I, ODI, and Test teams. However, these changes are not in the captaincy department; instead, new vice-captains have been appointed.
Star all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz, star batter Najmul Hossain Shanto and and talented batter Saif Hassan have been named as vice-captains in Test, ODI, and T20I cricket respectively.
These appointments are quite strange in nature because Najmul Hossain Shanto is the Test captain, and he will have Mehidy Hasan Miraz as his deputy, but in the ODI format, things will be totally opposite.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz was appointed as the ODI captain for a year, and he will have Najmul Hossain Shanto as his deputy, who is set to continue as Test skipper in the ongoing cycle of the ICC World Test Championship.
Talking about the T20I team, Litton Das is the skipper and will have star opening batter Saif Hassan as his deputy. Notably, Saif Hassan has looked in red-hot form in T20I cricket since getting a place in the team.
Why did Saif Hassan get T20I leadership?
Saif Hassan has played just 18 matches for the Bangladesh National Cricket Team in T20I cricket, but has impressed the selection committee with his stunning performances.
In those matches, he has scored 396 runs at an average of 28.28 and a strike rate of 121.84, and has provided the Bangla Tigers with good starts in most of the matches.
He will also have an opportunity to take over as full-time captain as Litton Das has been named as T20I skipper only till the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026.
"Saif Hassan's elevation as vice-captain of the T20 team comes on the back of consistent and impressive performances in the shortest format for Bangladesh. Litton Kumer Das has been entrusted with leading the side until the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in 2026," BCB said in a statement.
Abdur Razzak replaces Khaled Mashud as chairman of High Performance
Other than vice-captaincy appointments, BCB has made some changes to the setup. They appointed Rubaba Daula as Chairperson of the Women's Wing, and she has succeeded Abdur Razzak Raz, who will continue to contribute to the department in the role of Vice Chairman, reported Cricbuzz.
Also, Abdur Razzak is set to be appointed as the chairman of High Performance, replacing Khaled Mashud, who will become the chairman of grounds as he succeeds BCB President Aminul Islam.
Meanwhile, the BCB has decided to conduct a gender-sensitivity training session on Wednesday at the National Cricket Academy building in Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium after the shocking allegations from Jahanara Alam.
