Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Hasan has addressed the COVID-19 positive cases in the Sri Lankan camp on Sunday hours before the first ODI in Dhaka. Isuru Udana, Shiran Fernando, and bowling coach Chaminda Vaas returned COVID-19 positive, putting the three-match ODI series in doubt. Though the match went ahead as scheduled, Nazmul Hasan has stressed the need to increase the bubble’s security.

On Sunday, a few hours before the first ODI, three members from the Sri Lankan camp returned COVID-19 positive, while BCB director Khaled Mahmud also suffered the same fate earlier that day. Nevertheless, Udana’s and Vaas’ reports emerged COVID-19 negative later, with Fernando the only one infected, facilitating the first ODI to happen successfully. And despite the number of positive instances in the camp, the series was unlikely to get postponed.

Nazmul Hasan claimed they all followed the protocols and that nothing severe occurred to panic. Hasan feels that, at times, people can test positive for the virus despite abiding by the guidelines; hence, he believes it’s crucial to ensure they carry out the testing abundantly. Simultaneously, Hasan emphasized the need to increase the bio-bubble’s vigilance and stated that Fernando, who recovered from COVID-19 recently, must have tested positive due to the PCR detecting dead RNA from the virus that usually survives up to 28 days.

“We are following the protocol and we feel nothing serious happened that we need to panic. It can happen at times (someone testing positive) but there is a protocol in place. What we need to do and how many times we need to do the test to make sure that he is negative. But definitely we will increase our vigilance. Shiran Fernando recovered from Covid very recently, the PCR may have detected the dead RNA from the virus, many individuals have it on them up to 28 days,” Hasan said as quoted by India Today.
