Bangladesh vs West Indies 2021, 2nd Test: Day 2 - All-Round West Indies Now Controlling This Test

At the end of the second day of the Dhaka Test, the visitors West Indies are in the great position with their strong all-round performances against the hosts Bangladesh.

Starting the day on their overnight score of 223/5, West Indies scored 409 runs before losing their all wickets. At the stumps of the day, Bangladesh were struggling 105/4 as they are still trailing by 304 runs.

Overnight batsmen Nkrumah Bonner and Joshua Da Silva provided the solid start as they added 43 runs in the morning session before the fall of West Indies’ first wicket in that session. After playing the brilliant knock of 90 runs off 209 balls (7 fours), Bonner lost his wicket as Mehidy Hasan Miraz took that wicket. But before that wicket, Bonner and Joshua put the 88 runs partnership for the sixth wicket.

In that first session of the day, Joshua completed his half-century in 86 balls. At the lunch break, Joshua and Alzarri Joseph put the solid 59 runs partnership for the unbroken seventh wicket. In the second session, they stretched that partnership to the 100+ runs. Alzarri Joseph scored his half-century in 84 balls.

But both of them also missed their centuries. While Joshua scored 92 runs off 187 balls (10 fours), Alzarri Joseph scored 82 runs off 108 balls (8 fours and 5 sixes). Taijul Islam bowled Joshua after his 118 runs partnership with Joseph for the seventh wicket, while Abu Jayed got the wicket of Joseph. Both these bowlers also helped to end that innings by adding one more wicket each.

Both Abu Jayed (4/98) and Taijul Islam (4/108) got four wickets each in that innings.

The hosts Bangladesh started their innings at the beginning of the third session of the day. But the Caribbean pacer Shannon Gabriel provided the strong start by picking two quick wickets by dismissing the opener Soumya Sarkar (0) and Najmul Hossain Shanto (4). At that time, the hosts were struggling on 11/2.

Then another opener Tamim Iqbal and captain Mominul Haque tried to handle that early situation and set up the 58 runs partnership for the third wicket. However, the disciplined bowler Rahkeem Cornwall broke that partnership by dismissing Bangladesh captain Mominul Haque for 21 runs. Soon, in the very next over, Alzarri Joseph picked the wicket of opener Tamim Iqbal, who scored 44 runs off 52 balls (6 fours and only six).

Then Mushfiqur Rahim and Mohammad Mithun fought hard for the next 20 overs as Bangladesh didn’t lose any further wicket for the day. Rahim scored 27 not out off 61 balls while Mithun scored 6 not out off 61 balls as they have set up the 34 runs partnership for the unbroken fifth wicket.
