The 0-2 series defeat against Ireland has raised multiple questions in front of the Indian team management only after a few months of winning the 2026 T20 World Cup title. The second match defeat made it clear that the defeat in the first match was not a fluke; it was because of a well-rehearsed performance by the Ireland cricket team.
The team is widely known for its high-end batting across the sections of the batting line-up. Again and again, the batting line-up has produced several massive totals. Since winning the previous T20 World Cup title, the combination remains mostly the same.
The era after Suryakumar Yadav starts on a wrong note
The significant change came in the form of stripping Suryakumar Yadav from the team to appoint Shreyas Iyer as the skipper. Shreyas Iyer made a comeback in the format after a two-year-long absence. He made his return as the leader.
Iyer's return could be memorable if the team managed to live up to their reputation against the lower-ranked Ireland. As that didn't happen, the team management will have to address the issues that led them down in the recently concluded series.
Kris Srikkanth blames Tilak Varma and other middle-order batters for the 1-run defeat against Ireland
Former national team captain Kris Srikkanth believes that India lost the second and decisive match of the 2-match series against Ireland only because of a malfunctioning batting performance. The former batter mentioned that if the middle-order batters, especially Tilak Varma, Axar Patel, and Shivam Dube, could bat in a well-thought-out way, then the team may not have had to suffer the 1-run defeat, which cost them the series as well.
Kris Srikkanth observes that Tilak Varma and Axar Patel, both of the batters, did not show the required intention to rotate the run rate in a significant way. Criticizing Tilak, Srikkanth claims that the batter intended to take the innings till the end, and he left the field as the hero of the team. Whatever the plan might be, it actually did not work, and India was restricted to 154 runs against Ireland's 155.
“You can't play the way India did in the middle phase, especially Tilak Varma, Dube and Axar. All their strike rates were poor. You have to stabilise a bit and then start attacking in the middle phase. Otherwise, you'll be finished if you fail in the middle phase. India lost the game in the middle phase. Tilak Varma was just playing for himself by sneaking in ones and twos. Axar Patel was the same," Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.
“Tilak Varma tried to take it till the end and become the hero. He thought of winning it in the end and celebrating by lifting his jersey. These targets have to be chased down with an over to spare and not go till the end," he added.
India's batting will be tested against England
India is scheduled to face England from tomorrow in Chester-le-Street for the first of the five-match T20I series.
It will be the Men in Blue’s first match after suffering the rare T20I series loss against Ireland.
