“Spectacular spinner and attacking batter”- Axar Patel can be defined by these two terms. Axar Patel is one of the prominent spin all-rounders for India, who has played many matches for the country across all three formats.

Axar Patel is a left-arm orthodox spinner. He is also a lower-order batsman, who bats left-handed. He specializes in bowling and hence, is a bowling all-rounder.

Axar Patel is one such youngster who has played for Team India in all three formats. He has played more than 50 ODIs and T20Is and a handful of Tests. The left-armer has also played in some ICC tournaments.

Early Life and Career

Axar Patel was born in Nadiad City in Gujarat on January 20, 1994. His father Rajesh Patel motivated and supported him to play cricket. His mother wanted him to become an engineer. Patel grew up in Nadiad with his sister Shivangi and brother Sanship.

In 2012, Axar Patel joined the Gujarat domestic team. In 2013, he was part of the India Under-23 team that won the ACC Emerging Teams Cup. With a wonderful show in

First-class cricket in the same year, he earned a contract with Mumbai Indians in IPL 2013. However, he did not play any matches.

International Career

Axar Patel made his international debut in June 2014 in an ODI game against Bangladesh. Next year, he also made his T20I debut during a series against Zimbabwe.

However, Patel had to wait for his Test debut for almost six years, before he finally had a chance to make a memorable debut against England in 2021.

Post his international debut in 2015, the left-handed batsman failed to cement his place in the national side. He shared a close competition with Ravindra Jadeja, who also had an exactly similar profile as a left-arm spin all-rounder.

However, after 2020, Patel has had regular opportunities on the national side, especially due to Jadeja’s frequent injuries. He has played more than 50 games in both One Day Internationals and T20 Internationals.

Axar Patel was part of the Indian team that won the Asia Cup titles in 2018 and 2023. He was also a member of the ICC World Test Championship Final 2023, where India finished as runners-up.

IPL Career

Mumbai Indians first picked Axar Patel in the 2013 season, where he warmed the bench in all games. Later, he became a member of Punjab Kings from 2014 to 2018. Patel also won the Emerging Player of the Tournament in IPL 2014, getting 17 scalps in the season.

He continued with his consistent show in the next seasons, getting 10-plus wickets from 2015 to 2017. He accounts for more than 100 wickets and a couple of half-centuries in his IPL career.

The bowling all-rounder is now part of Delhi Capitals. The franchise captured him in a 2019 auction and has retained him over the years. He is nearing 150 games in the IPL and has been a wonderful contributor with both bat and ball.
