Rishabh Pant Senuran Muthusamy

Team India skipper and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant was disappointed after a Decision Review System (DRS) call went in favour of South Africa all-rounder Senuran Muthusamy. The incident took place on the second day (Sunday, November 23) of the match at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.

South Africa ended Day 1 on 247 for 6 after choosing to bat, with Senuran Muthusamy (25) and Kyle Verreynne (1) at stumps. Kuldeep Yadav was the best bowler for India on the day with 3 wickets for 48 from 17 overs, while Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Ravindra Jadeja chipped in with a wicket each.

Overnight pair Senuran Muthusamy and Kyle Verreynne negotiated the entire first session of Day 2 without offering India a breakthrough. The only opportunity came when Ravindra Jadeja trapped Muthusamy in front of the stumps, and umpire Rod Tucker raised his finger.

However, Muthusamy reviewed immediately, and UltraEdge revealed a faint spike as the ball passed the glove. Third umpire Chris Gaffaney overturned the on-field call, allowing the left-handed batter to continue his innings.

The Indians were visibly unhappy with the reversal, with Rishabh Pant expressing his frustration over the DRS outcome. The South Africans denied India any wickets before the interval.

First Wicketless Session in India vs South Africa 2nd Test in Guwahati

South Africa completely controlled the morning passage of play. Notably, it was the first wicketless session of the Test as South Africa reached 316 for 6 at the end of the morning session.

Resuming on 247 for 6, Senuran Muthusamy and Kyle Verreynne shut down India’s hopes of wrapping up the innings quickly. They handled the second new ball with composure, negotiating Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj before settling comfortably against spin.

The pair rotated the strike well, denying India even a sniff of a breakthrough on a surface still offering decent batting conditions. Rishabh Pant used every bowling option except Nitish Kumar Reddy, but nothing dislodged the stubborn partnership.

This Is a Game of First Innings - Former India Batter’s Big Statement

Former India opener Aakash Chopra said that the outcome of the match will depend on performances in the first innings. He stated that South Africa’s decision to include Senuran Muthusamy could also become a key factor in the match.

"Looking at this pitch, I feel this is a game of first innings - how well South Africa play and how well we respond to it. South Africa have added a left-arm spinner Senuran Muthusamy to their playing XI," Chopra said.

"They will be bowling last, so I think Muthusamy will have a role to play. First innings batting will be very crucial and India also have to account for the fading light situation in the must-win game," he further stated.
