The 12th edition of the Big Bash League (BBL) season will begin on Tuesday, December 13, with the Sydney Thunder facing the Melbourne Stars in the first match of the season at the Manuka Oval in Canberra. Marcus Stoinis and Joe Burns have been named to play for the Melbourne Stars in the season opener despite not fully recovering from a COVID-19 infection.

The Melbourne Stars struggled last season and will be looking to perform better this season. They failed to reach the playoffs and finished seventh in the points table. Adam Zampa will lead the Stars in the absence of Glenn Maxwell, who suffered a leg injury last month. Earlier, Zampa led the Stars against the Adelaide Strikers last season after the squad was affected by COVID.

The rules in place during the just-concluded T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia clearly state that infected players are eligible for selection, with the team medical staff taking the final decision. Australia faced the same conundrum when Adam Zampa contracted the virus midway through the ICC T20 World Cup 2022.

Although the leg-spinner is still eligible to play, the management has decided to replace him with Ashton Agar for the Super 12 match against Sri Lanka.

Last season’s Big Bash League was hit by the outbreak of COVID-19 in several franchise camps. The final stage of the tournament had to be played in some venues across Australia due to the increasing number of cases. The Perth Scorchers won the final against the Sydney Sixers at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium due to travel restrictions.
