Sydney Sixers captain Moises Henriques took a brilliant one-handed stunner during the Big Bash League 2023/24 match against Melbourne Stars. While defending 155 runs against Stars, Henriques went backwards to dismiss Melbourne batsman Thomas Rogers for 20 runs on the bowling of Sixers bowler Jackson Bird.
The incident took place during the second ball of the fifth over when Sydney Sixers bowler Jackson Bird bowled a hard-length ball which went on to hit the corner of Thomas Rogers’ bat, however, he was not lucky enough as Rogers was not able to clear the mid-off fielder where Moises Henriques was waiting to take up a one-handed blinder while walking backwards.

However, there was a bit of confusion regarding the efficiency of the catch as it was believed that the ball touched the ground. Though, later the umpire gave Thomas Rogers out after the decision was reviewed.
“If the ball hits the ground at any point in that process, I think he’s not out,” former Australian all-rounder Brendon Julian said in commentary, as quoted by Fox Cricket.
“The ball’s definitely hit the deck … the ball clearly touched the surface,” Bret Lee said.
Getting back to the match, while batting first the Sydney Sixers didn’t start well as opener Josh Philippe had to walk back for a score of 19 runs off 15 balls. Philippe was followed by Daniel Hughes, who departed for 2 runs whereas Moises Henriques was not able to much impact and he walked back for 5 runs.
Jordan Silk also had to depart for 1 run as Melbourne Stars bowlers Haris Rauf and Usama Mir took a three-wicket haul. Marcus Stoinis also picked up a wicket during the innings.
Sydney Sixers opener James Vince played an innings of 83 runs from 55 balls which included 8 fours and 2 sixes. Jack Edwards gave a finishing touch to the innings and the Sixers ended their first innings at 154/8.
Chasing down the target, Melbourne Stars didn’t start off well as Thomas Rogers and Sam Harper added 40 runs for the first wicket. Whole Stars lost their five wickets for 121 runs, but Hilton Cartwright made sure that Melbourne got over the line and played an innings of 47* runs.
Sydney Sixers are currently placed in the second spot of the BBL 2023/24 points table and have won three matches from four games in the tournament. On the other hand, Melbourne Stars are placed at the bottom and registered their first win in the competition by defeating Sydney Sixers. Brisbane Heat are placed at the top of the BBL standings with three wins from four matches.
