BCCI angered by Gautam Gambhir's loudmouth nature, strict action in the offing

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly not pleased with head coach Gautam Gambhir’s comments in the press conference after the loss in the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata. Gambhir’s position as head coach could be decided after the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka.
India were completely outclassed by South Africa in the two-Test series. They lost the opener in Kolkata by 30 runs before suffering a 408-run defeat in Guwahati. The back-to-back losses handed the Men in Blue a 0-2 whitewash. Notably, it was the second whitewash in a home Test series under Gambhir’s tenure.
BCCI Not Pleased With Gautam Gambhir’s Comments After Kolkata Defeat
According to a report by the Hindustan Times, the BCCI is unhappy with Gautam Gambhir’s remarks about the Kolkata pitch. Gambhir is expected to continue as head coach, as there are few replacements available. However, his future could depend on India’s performance in the T20 World Cup.
“The BCCI is not exactly pleased with India head coach Gautam Gambhir’s forthright comments on the Kolkata pitch following the team’s recent Test defeat to South Africa, even as the board stops short of taking any immediate action," the report read.
"Sources indicate that while Gambhir is likely to remain in charge for now due to a “lack of alternatives", his position could come under scrutiny later this year — particularly if India underperforms in the T20 World Cup at home."
This Is Exactly the Pitch We Were Looking For - Gautam Gambhir
India collapsed while chasing 124 in Kolkata. Gautam Gambhir defended the Eden Gardens surface, stating that the pitch performed exactly as the team had requested. He said the defeat was simply the result of poor execution, not the wicket.
“This is exactly the pitch we were looking for. The curator was very, very helpful and supportive. This is exactly what we wanted, and this is exactly what we got. When you don’t play well, this is what happens," Gambhir had said after the Kolkata defeat.
“Yes, it might not be a wicket which is going to be very flamboyant where you can play those big shots. But if you are willing to put your head down, definitely it is a wicket where you can score."
BCCI Concerned After India’s Test Collapse; Gambhir’s Future Hinges on T20 World Cup
The comments created concern inside the BCCI, especially since India’s batting failed on both the Kolkata and Guwahati pitches. The poor performance has raised doubts about whether the team is preparing well and adapting to different conditions.
The board plans to review India’s Test decline with Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. However, they are unlikely to make quick or major changes right now. Split coaching is not being considered seriously, and there are very few alternate options for a head coach at the moment.
India is now shifting to white-ball matches, and the BCCI will be watching how Gambhir manages the team during this period. He is safe for now, but the upcoming T20 World Cup could decide his future.
