The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the fresh Super Overs rules for the Indian Premier League (IPL). The BCCI announced that the Super Overs will continue until a winner is decided, but they must be completed within an hour.

Additionally, the IPL teams are also allowed to take one unsuccessful DRS review per Super Over. The board announced the rules ahead of the IPL 2025 opener between the defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Eden Gardens on Saturday, March 22.

BCCI unveils fresh Super Over rules for IPL 2025

As reported by Cricbuzz, the BCCI informed all ten teams after the Captains' Meet: “As many Super Overs can be played until a winner is decided till one hour after the completion of the main match. The first Super Over has to start within 10 minutes of the main match finishing. If the first Super Over is a tie, then the subsequent Super Over must start five minutes after its completion.”

The BCCI further noted, “The match referee will inform the captains which will be the final super over if he feels that the period of 1 hour is going to be breached. All player warnings and penance time unserved in the main match will be carried forward into the Super Over. The match referee will inform captains of any time restrictions subject to the MPC on interrupted Super Over. One unsuccessful review per Super Over for each team will be permitted.”

IPL Super Over rules in detail:

How the Super Over works:

  1. Each team gets one over (six balls) to score as many runs as possible. The team with the most runs wins, regardless of wickets lost.
  2. If a team loses two wickets, their batting will end immediately.
  3. If the Super Over is also tied, another Super Over is played until the winner is determined. There is no limit on how many Super Overs can be played unless exceptional circumstances arise.

Timing during the Super Overs:

  1. The Super Over will take place 10 minutes after the match ends, and that will only be decided by the IPL Match Referee.
  2. If there are delays during the Super Over, extra time is given. The available extra time is either the gap between the actual match ending time and the scheduled end time if full extra time was used or 20 minutes.
  3. The Super Over is played on the same pitch where the main match will be played unless the umpires decide otherwise.
  4. Only players who participated in the match (including concussion replacements) can play in the Super Over.
  5. Any penalty time a player was serving in the main match carries over to the Super Over.

These rules will be followed during the Super Over:

  1. The same umpires from the match will officiate the Super Over.
  2. The team that batted second in the match will bat first in the Super Over.
  3. Each team will be allowed to get one unsuccessful DRS review per Super Over.
  4. The fielding captain will select a ball from a box of spare balls provided by the umpires (used match balls, but not new ones). The second fielding team can either use the same ball or pick a different one from that box.
  5. The fielding side will have the luxury to choose which end to bowl from.
  6. Fielding restrictions will be the same as the last over of a regular match.
  7. There will be a 5-minute break between the two overs of the Super Over.

What happens if the Super Over is tied?

  1. If the first Super Over is also tied, another Super Over will be played (unless restricted by clause 16.3.1).
  2. The next Super Over will start 5 minutes after the previous one.
  3. The team that batted second in the last Super Over will bat first in the next one.
  4. Each team must use the same ball from their previous Super Over.
  5. The bowling end must switch for the next Super Over.

Rules for players in multiple Super Overs:

  1. A batter dismissed in any Super Over cannot bat in the next Super Over. If a batter retires hurt, they will be dubbed as “Retired Out,” and they cannot play, even with the fielding captain’s approval.
  2. A bowler who bowled in a Super Over cannot bowl in the next Super Over.

What will be the next if the Super Over can’t be completed?

  1. If the Super Over or subsequent Super Overs cannot be completed for any reason, the match is declared a tie, and points will be shared between the teams according to IPL rules.
