The Boxing Day Test between India and Australia was full of drama, controversies, and heated debates, and two of the main reasons were Travis Head’s vulgar celebration of Rishabh Pant’s wicket and Yashasvi Jaiswal’s controversial dismissal on Day 5 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
Yashasvi Jaiswal’s dismissal came at a crucial moment when India was battling to save the fourth Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia in Melbourne. Attempting a hook shot off Pat Cummins, the young Indian opener seemingly nicked the ball to wicketkeeper Alex Carey.
BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla and Rohit Sharma criticize the third umpire for Yashasvi Jaiswal’s controversial dismissal at the MCG
However, the on-field umpire Joel Wilson ruled him not out, but Australia immediately challenged the decision, taking DRS, and the drama unfolded, leading to debate among the cricket fraternity. While visual evidence appeared to show an edge, Snicko revealed no spike or deflection, leaving the decision in dark waters at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
Despite this, the third umpire overturned the on-field call, declaring Yashasvi Jaiswal out. The decision left the batter visibly frustrated, as he had a heated argument with the umpires, but the controversy didn’t end there. BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla publicly criticized the third umpire’s decision, claiming Jaiswal was "clearly not out" and questioning the reliance on technology.
Fueling fire to discussions about the fairness of the decision, the BCCI Vice-President posted on X: “Yashasvi Jaiswal was clearly not out. The third umpire should have taken note of what technology was suggesting. While overruling the field umpire, the third umpire should have solid reasons.”

Adding to the uproar, Indian captain Rohit Sharma expressed his dissatisfaction while admitting Yashasvi was out if you looked with the naked eye but mentioned that everyone knows technology is not 100 percent correct. He added that in such cases India is always on the receiving end.
Michael Vaughan and Mark Waugh defend Yashasvi Jaiswal’s dismissal amid ongoing controversy
Reacting to the controversy, former England captain Michael Vaughan and former Australian cricketer Mark Waugh have brushed aside the ongoing debate surrounding Yashasvi Jaiswal's controversial dismissal during the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Melbourne.
Michael Vaughan and Mark Waugh both backed the third umpire’s decision, insisting the dismissal was fair and urging everyone to "move on." Michael Vaughan took to social media to counter the criticism from BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla and Indian skipper Rohit Sharma.
Responding to their claims about errors in the third umpire’s judgment and technology’s reliability, Michael Vaughan posted on X: “Seriously... all this has to stop... It was OUT... all decisions yesterday were the correct ones... Australia was just better this week.”

It was a very obvious deflection off the bat/glove: Mark Waugh
On the other hand, Mark Waugh dismissed the controversy by stating firmly that Yashasvi Jaiswal was clearly out. The former Australian batter has emphasized that the deflection off the bat or glove was evident and questioned how the on-field umpire missed it initially.
However, Waugh admitted that Snicko may not have picked up the faint edge due to its subtle nature but insisted that the third umpire ultimately made the correct decision.
Mark Waugh replied to Fox Sports’ X post: “Let’s get this straight once and for all. Jaiswal was clearly out; it was a very obvious deflection off the bat/glove. Not sure how the umpire missed it in the first place. Snicko missed it maybe as it was a very soft glancing blow, but at the end of the day, the right decision was made.”
