The future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma who recently created history in ODI cricket has become one of the biggest talking points in Indian cricket. With the 2027 ODI World Cup still more than a year away, fans are eager to know whether the modern batting legends will continue to be part of India's plans for the mega tournament.
As discussions around their future continue, the BCCI has finally given an update without revealing much detail on Kohli's and Rohit’s 2027 ODI World Cup dream. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has confirmed that India's World Cup planning is in full swing.
BCCI shares update on India's 2027 ODI World Cup roadmap
Devajit Saikia revealed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India is working closely with national selectors, coaches, support staff, and other key members of the Indian setup to build a strong roadmap for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The BCCI secretary shared that the board is taking inputs from all the stakeholders and the process is already underway. But Saikia made it clear that such matters are not meant for public discussion. But Virat Kohli tipped for 'royal send-off' by Kris Srikkanth.
Saikia was quoted as saying by PTI: “As the head of the board, we have a very well-knit team and a lot of experts. All stakeholders are taken on board. Whatever decisions are made involve the cricket committee, the selectors, and all other stakeholders, including the support staff, the head coach, and the players concerned. There are regular conversations taking place. For that reason, we do not need any special session of interaction. This is an ongoing process.”
Hamstring concerns raise questions over Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's World Cup dream
There have been massive speculations over Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s future despite their remaining two of India's most experienced and successful ODI players. Some reports claim Kohli is significant part of the 2027 ODI World Cup planning, but his hamstring issue raises doubts.
Rohit has also been dealing with the hamstring problem and has yet to show his fire in the ongoing ODI series against Afghanistan after an ordinary IPL 2026 season with the Mumbai Indians. His fitness could become a major hurdle between his World Cup dreams.
Ro-Ko's future remains mystery as BCCI stays tight-lipped
However, the BCCI secretary has not mentioned anything about Kohli and Rohit’s place in the future ODI plans, but he has stressed that these are strategic decisions and the board does not want to share sensitive details before any final call is taken.
Saikia signed off by saying, “Further, I do not think I should disclose anything before the media or the public because these are strategic discussions. I am not authorized to speak about them before the media. Secondly, these are matters that should remain within the boardroom.”
Notably, Kohli had a remarkable IPL 2026 season, helping RCB to retain the trophy last month. He is now expected to return to India's colors in the upcoming ODI series in England. It remains to be seen whether Rohit returns to the India XI for the final ODI against Afghanistan in Chennai.
