India’s Asia Cup 2025 campaign is already in trouble even before leaving for the UAE. India’s squad announcement for the upcoming tournament has turned into a mystery. The selectors are set to announce the Asia Cup 2025 squad on Tuesday, August 19.
A Cricbuzz journalist claimed that India’s Test captain, Shubman Gill, will not feature in the T20I squad for the upcoming continental tournament organized by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). Apart from Gill, Mohammed Siraj is also not in contention for the tournament.
India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad to be revealed without a press meet
On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer’s fitness is still under the scanner, and chances are slim that he will make the cut. To add to the surprise, the BCCI will announce the Asia Cup quietly.

The journalist revealed that there will be no press conference or interaction with the Indian selectors or team management, including head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav. The BCCI will only release the squad list to ignore questions about the future of some big players.
Gill and Siraj unlikely for the Asia Cup. Even Shreyas is doubtful and there will be no place for Shami. Meanwhile no press conference to announce the Aaia Cup squad. @BCCI will put out a release. @cricbuzz https://t.co/rBlSybM0S9

BCCI set to drop Shubman Gill as selectors back India’s new T20 stars for Asia Cup 2025
Meanwhile, the Indian selectors are set to meet at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai on Tuesday, August 19, to finalize the squad for the tournament. Shubman Gill is all but confirmed to be overlooked, as selectors believe his style doesn’t match the fast pace of T20 cricket.
The selectors are ready to back India’s new-age T20 stars. The idea is to continue with Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma as openers, while Tilak Varma is being looked at for the crucial No. 3 role. Captain Suryakumar Yadav is set to continue at No. 4 to form the backbone of India’s batting in T20Is.

Source was quoted as saying by Times of India: “Gill is a terrific batsman; all the selectors and head coach Gautam Gambhir are huge fans of his batting, and he is rated almost as highly as Virat Kohli in India’s cricket circles in terms of potential.”
He added, “However, he doesn’t fit into the T20 scheme of things right now. Presently, the idea is to persist with ‘keeper-bat Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma as openers, with Tilak Varma coming in at No. 3 and skipper Suryakumar at No. 4. If you see, Abhishek and Varma are rated as the No. 1 & No. 2 batters in T20Is in the ICC rankings currently. How can you keep them out?”
'You can’t judge a player just by one IPL'
The selectors believe that sticking with these players will give India the edge in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 next month.
The source signed off by saying, “Even Hardik Pandya had a bad IPL last year (while captaining MI), but he turned out to be one of India’s biggest heroes of their 2024 T20 World Cup triumph in the West Indies. Even greats like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have endured bad IPLs, but they were a different beast while playing for India in T20Is. You can’t judge a player just by one IPL.”
