India middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav will retain the T20 captaincy for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, set to be played from September 9 to 28 in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Suryakumar has resumed batting practice at the Centre of Excellence, ending speculation about Shubman Gill taking over the role.

The 34-year-old is currently recovering from sports hernia surgery in Munich, Germany. Surya has begun rehabilitation at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. While there are concerns over his participation in the Asia Cup, he is working hard to regain full fitness in time for the eight-team tournament.

“The selection meeting will be attended by India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav, who will fly to Mumbai from Bengaluru, where he is currently stationed at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) while recuperating after a sports hernia surgery."

"This development confirms that SKY will continue as India’s T20 captain, thus quashing all rumours around India’s new Test captain, Shubman Gill, also being given the T20 captaincy now," the TOI report read.

Suryakumar Yadav Last Played for the Men in Blue in February 2025

Suryakumar Yadav last played for the national cricket team in February 2025. He captained the team to a 4-1 home T20I series win over England. The right-handed batter was not included in the West Zone’s 15-member squad for the upcoming Duleep Trophy.

Shubman Gill, who made his T20I debut against Sri Lanka in January 2023, has played 21 matches, scoring 578 runs at an average of 30.42 and a strike rate of 139.27, including one century and three fifties. He last played in a T20I against Sri Lanka in July 2024.

Gill has been in fine form in the IPL, amassing 3,866 runs in 118 matches at an average of 39.44 and a strike rate of 138.71, with four centuries and 26 half-centuries.

Yashasvi Jaiswal Iyer Likely To Be Left Out Of Asia Cup 2025 Squad

The report also stated that Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer are unlikely to be included in the Asia Cup 2025 squad. Selectors have advised Jaiswal to focus on red-ball cricket following his impressive performances in England.

With Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma expected to continue as openers, Shubman Gill is also struggling to secure a place in the T20 side. Abhishek Sharma recently climbed to the top spot in the ICC T20I batter rankings.

“With India looking to persist with the opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, Gill is currently struggling to even make it to the side. Even Yashasvi Jaiswal, who had a great series in England, and middle-order bat Shreyas Iyer are likely not to be picked for the T20 side. Jaiswal has been told by the selectors to focus on red-ball cricket," a BCCI source was quoted as saying by TOI.
