The BCCI held a formal meeting with all the 10 IPL franchises in Mumbai on July 31, Wednesday, to discuss the roadmap for IPL 2025. A few crucial insights resulted from the meeting and the BCCI has aid that it will decide by the end of August.

The IPL franchises debated on topics like Impact players and to number of retentions. A few franchises like KKR and SRH were not in favour of mega auctions as well as they felt it spoiled the hard work of the franchise to attain a good squad.

At one point KKR owner Shahrukh Khan and Punjab Kings co-owner Nessa Wadia had a heated exchange during the meeting. Wadia however, denied reports of any animosity between him and the KKR boss.

Sanjiv Goenka of Lucknow Super Giants, Rupa Gurunath of Chennai Super Kings, Manoj Badale of Rajasthan Royals, and Prathmesh Mishra of Royal Challengers Bangalore also attended the meeting. The Mumbai Indians owners, the Ambanis attended the meeting via a video conference.

Later in the day after the end of the meeting, the BCCI came out with a statement saying that they would evaluate the feedback from the franchises before coming to a final decision. The decision is expected to be made by the end of the month.

BCCI To Evaluate Feedback With IPL Governing Coul Before Final Decision

"The franchise owners tabled feedback on player regulations and other commercial aspects, including central merchandising, licensing, and gaming, The BCCI will now take these recommendations to the IPL Governing Council for further deliberation and evaluation before formulating the IPL player regulations," the BCCI said in a media release.

The two most heated topics of discussion were player retention and the Impact Player. SRH owner Kavya Maran further requested the BCCI not to impose any caps on the number of retentions of several overseas as well as capped and uncapped Indians. She said that franchises would like to retain most of the players.

The SRH co-owner further requested BCCI to impose bans on overseas players who pull out from the tournament citing injury or personal reasons after enrolling their names for the auction. Many think that the reason behind it is that SRH bought him for a price of 1.5 crores which was way lower than the salary he got at RCB in IPL 2022 and 2023 which was 10 crores.

"After being selected in the auction, if a player doesn't come to play the season for any reason apart from injury, he should be banned," she said. Maran however, did not name the Sri Lankan all-rounder.

The Impact Player rule was another major part of the discussion Delhi Capitals owner Part Jindal wants it scrapped because it limits the role of the all-rounders, particularly the Indian all-rounders. Even Rohit Sharma in IPL 2024 said that he was against the Impact Player role for the same reason.

The BCCI and the IPL governing council will not sit down and discuss the various suggestions kept by the franchise owners before regulating the rules of the IPL player retention.
