Shubman Gill Retired Out
PC: X

Shubman Gill walked off the field and looked very stiff in the dressing room on Saturday morning. The BCCI has now provided an official update on his injury.

India started their two-match red-ball campaign against the Proteas at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Captain Shubman Gill lost another toss, and the Proteas skipper opted to bat first. Despite coming into bat first, the Proteas could manage no more than just 159 runs in their first innings.

Indian legendary paceman Jasprit Bumrah did a fairly good job with another five-wicket haul and was well backed by spinner Kuldeep Yadav and new ball partner Mohammed Siraj. They did not hand the Proteas a single chance to bounce back with the bat.

Shubman Gill's medical bulletin released by the BCCI

Simon Harmer, the left-arm orthodox spinner, dismissed Washington Sundar, breaking off a strong stand between KL Rahul, the opener, and India's new number 3. This brought Captain Shubman Gill onto the pitch, and he hit a boundary off his third ball.

Gill, after the boundary, was seen holding his neck in pain and was getting attention from the physio. He then walked off the field and looked very stiff when he entered the dressing room. Everyone hoped for his return to the field, but the latest BCCI says that he has a neck spasm and is being monitored, and a decision on his return should be made according to progress.

"Shubman Gill has a neck spasm and is being monitored by the BCCI medical team. A decision on his participation today will be taken as per his progress," BCCI said in an official statement.

Rishabh Pant claims the no. 1 spot in the most sixes list for India

Rishabh Pant, the star cricketer for India, has returned to the Indian team after his long absence from the format owing to the injury he suffered during the England tour. He was picked for the Indian team on the back of some of the most convincing performances for India A.

Though Pant could not score many runs with the bat in the Indian team, he smacked two sixes in his short innings of just 27 runs. With these two sixes, he is now officially the highest six-hitter for India, having surpassed the former Indian opener Virender Sehwag.

Sehwag hit 90 sixes in his career, which comprised 103 games, and Rishabh Pant now has 92* sixes in just 48 games.

India is nearing a staggering collapse despite immense batting depth

Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir often relies on batting depth and, hence, brings more and more all-rounders into the Indian team. Despite having dropped seam bowling all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, India played with Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, adding up to 3 all-rounders in the XI.

Even Ravindra Jadeja and Dhruv Jurel could not hold onto India's innings in the lower order as they suffered a humiliating collapse. Despite such batting depth, India are 8 wickets down for just 187 runs in the first innings, and if Gill doesn't return, then India are already down by a player.
