The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reportedly refused to send Indian Men’s and Women’s cricket teams to play in the upcoming Asian Games to be played in Hangzhou, China, this year. The BCCI made the decision not to send their team to the Asia Games due to their busy international schedule.
The Asian Games 2022 were scheduled to take place last year but were postponed due to China’s zero COVID-19 policy. The matches will be played in T20 cricket format at the Hangzhou Asian Games, which will be held from September 23 to October 28. Indian cricket teams will not compete due to prior commitments.

India’s chef de mission for the Asian Games, Bhupender Bajwa revealed to Indian Express the reason behind the BCCI’s decision to opt out of the Asian Games. Bajwa confirmed that the national team will participate in all sports events except cricket.
“We have entries in all sports except one – cricket (team) isn’t going. They said they are preoccupied. We sent 3-4 emails to them but when we had to send entries to the organisers, they said they won’t go,” Bajwa was quoted as saying.
According to the report, the BCCI was notified one day before the deadline to send entries and that the Indian cricket team’s future schedule was already finalised.
“We had received the mail from IOA just one day before the deadline. At the same time, the BCCI already has finalised the FTP for women’s cricket. During the Asian Games, our team won’t be available as they will be playing in a tournament,” the BCCI official said.

The BCCI will host the upcoming edition of the ODI World Cup in October and November. The Indian team won the trophy when they last hosted the ICC Trophy in a 50-over format in 2011. Meanwhile, the Indian women’s team will play against South Africa and New Zealand in the limited-overs series during September and October.
The BCCI didn’t send their men’s and women’s teams to compete in the 2010 and 2014 Asian Games, where cricket was included in the multisport event, due to their commitments. Bangladesh and Sri Lanka won a gold medal each time in men’s cricket, while Pakistan emerged as champions in both editions of women’s cricket.
