'BCCI, Rohit Sharma trying to ruin Hardik Pandya's career' - Fans react as Suryakumar Yadav becomes India's new T20I captain

The BCCI, on Thursday (July 18), finally announced Team India's new T20I captain. The need for a new captain arose after Rohit Sharma's retirement from the shortest format of the game last month.

After leading India to their second T20 World Cup title, the veteran batsman announced his retirement from T20Is. Following Rohit's retirement, it was expected that Hardik Pandya would be replacing him as the T20I captain. Pandya had led the side in the format last year when Rohit did not play T20Is.

Pandya was also the vice-captain of the team during the T20 World Cup last month. He had played a key role with both bat and ball in India's victorious campaign. However, the selectors and the new team management have decided to appoint Suryakumar Yadav as the new T20I captain of India even though Pandya is more experienced as a captain.

As per media reports, concerns over Pandya's fitness were a key reason behind Suryakumar getting the nod ahead of him. He has played in only 46 of the 79 T20Is that India have played since the start of 2022. While Suryakumar is not as experienced as Pandya when it comes to captaincy, he does have the experience of leading a team.

In addition to leading Mumbai in the domestic circuit in the past, the star batter also led India in T20Is last year. Under his captaincy, India beat Australia 4-1 at home before drawing the series 1-1 in South Africa. And as the BCCI announced him as the new captain, the cricketing fraternity was quick to share its views on the same.

India squad for Sri Lanka T20Is announced:

While confirming Suryakumar Yadav as the new T20I captain, the BCCI also announced Team India's squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka. While Pandya is in the squad, he has also been replaced as the vice-captain with Shubman Gill being named as Suryakumar's deputy.

Apart from Suryakumar and Pandya, the likes of Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, and Mohammed Siraj will be returning to action in T20Is for the first time since the World Cup victory.
