T Dilip unlikely to get another contract from BCCI
India’s fielding coach T. Dilip is not expected to get another contract, which means his time with the India National Cricket Team could end once the England tour is over this month. Amid this, Varun Chakravarthy and Harshit Rana ruled out; Ravi Bishnoi named as replacement for Zimbabwe T20Is.
Actually, fielding coach T. Dilip, bowling coach Morne Morkel, and assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate all had signed a two-year contract with the BCCI. These contracts will end after India’s ongoing white-ball tour of England.
However, Morne Morkel and Ryan ten Doeschate have extension clauses in their contracts. The BCCI wants both of them to continue because they have done a good job over the last two years. Gautam Gambhir is also reportedly happy with the bowling coach and assistant coach’s work and wants them to remain part of his coaching setup going forward.
BCCI ready for major change after England tour
So, the BCCI is planning to make changes in the fielding department, and because of that, Dilip is unlikely to receive another extension. He had joined the Indian team as the fielding coach when Rahul Dravid was the head coach. He soon became one of the most popular members of the support staff because of his positive attitude and the energy he brought to the dressing room.
Dilip started the 'Best Fielder Medal' tradition after every match, which became very popular among the players and fans. His motivational talks before and after matches also helped keep the team's spirit high. After India won the 2024 T20 World Cup, Rahul Dravid stepped down as head coach.
Batting coach Vikram Rathour and bowling coach Paras Mhambrey also left with him. T Dilip was the only member of Dravid's coaching staff who stayed and continued working with Gautam Gambhir.
BCCI set to back Morkel and Ryan, new fielding coach likely
But after India's disappointing Border-Gavaskar Trophy tour of Australia, the BCCI removed two Indian members of the support staff, and T Dilip was one of them. A few months later, in May 2025, he returned to the team just before India's tour of England.
Even after his return, India's fielding has not improved much. During the Asia Cup, the team dropped several important catches. They also made many fielding mistakes during India's successful T20 World Cup 2026 campaign.
Even on the England tour, their fielding was a major concern. As a result, the BCCI has now decided to move in a different direction and is likely to appoint a new fielding coach. However, Morkel and Ryan ten Doeschate are expected to get the extension, as the BCCI is also impressed by their work.
