The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) senior men’s selection committee reshuffle is on the cards as the current chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s tenure is coming to an end; as reported, it is set to conclude around September 2026, following earlier contract extensions by the board. Now Shiv Sunder Das is set to finish his term as a selector.
As per the reports from RevSportz, Shiv Sunder Das, who is also the current selector from the East Zone, is set to step down from the role, and there is no extension for the former India National Cricket Team batter, as the BCCI will soon post for the vacancy of the roles after their tenure is over.
Shiv Sunder Das also to walk away from BCCI selector role
As per the rules of the BCCI, a selector is able to continue up to four years in a selection committee, junior and senior. In total, they can work for five years with two committees combined. Shiv Sunder Das was appointed as the selector of the East Zone back in 2023, and later in December this year his tenure will be over.
Previously, the selection of selectors used to happen as per the BCCI AGM-specific. However, it has changed after the overhaul of the apex body, and now, as per the rules of the Lodha Committee, things for the selectors have changed to contract-specific. BCCI will put out a vacancy post in a few months, and once all the applications are received, they will appoint a new selector from the East Zone.
Shiv Sunder Das' record
Shiv Sunder Das has played 23 Test matches for India and four ODIs. The former Odisha cricketer scored 1326 runs in 40 innings with two centuries and 9 half-centuries with an average of 34.89. He played for two years for the Men in Blue in the traditional format of the game. He was part of the famous victory at Eden Gardens against Australia.
Das also played four ODI matches, and he did not do well, scoring just 39 runs, and thus he was dropped. Though he had a terrific First-class record, he could not replicate the same in international cricket. In 180 FC matches, he scored 10908 runs and also had an unbeaten score of 300 in the format, with 24 centuries in the format as well.
However, post his retirement, he transitioned into coaching and national selection roles, as he served as the coach for domestic sides like Odisha and Manipur. He was appointed as coach of the Odisha cricket team in 2017 and later took charge of the Manipur cricket team in August 2018. He also worked with U-16 and U-19 national camps.
Why will Ajit Agarkar not get an extension beyond 2027?
Ajit Agarkar, on the other hand, will also be walking away from the role in September. As there is a bit of complication in his tenure, as he took over the charge in July 2023, by the rule book, he can continue until June 2027. However, he was provided with three years contract after Chetan Sharma resigned.
So, as of now, there have been no discussions between the BCCI and Agarkar yet regarding another extension. Even if Agarkar gets an extension, it will be till July 2027, and after that he has to step down.
