Amid the internal clash in Bihar's top cricket board, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has formed a three-member special panel for Bihar's team selection for the Ranji Trophy 2026-27 and for the various age-group domestic tournaments. The specially selected panel comprises former Indian cricketers and former selectors of the national cricket team.
The Bihar cricket board is currently without a secure hierarchy because of the conflict between two groups, as was reported before. The batters have been under the court's observation. As the future of the state cricket board is yet to be decided, BCCI took a step to run Bihar's cricket circle.
BCCI sends special committee for players' selection in Bihar
The upcoming Ranji Trophy and the other domestic tournaments are knocking on the door; a few state cricket boards have already announced their squads, while Bihar's team for the domestic tournaments is yet to be formed. For the players' selection across the domestic tournaments, BCCI has named a panel of three professionals, who have years of experience in administrative work.
According to a Times of India report, published on October 5, former Indian bowler Harvinder Singh, former Tamil Nadu first-class cricketers Sridharan Sharath and Amitabh Vijayvargiya have been named in the panel.
Harvinder will lead the team throughout the process. Among these three, two have already experience in the players' selection. Harvinder and Sarath have worked as junior selectors and national team selectors in the past.
A different panel for age division cricket
While this panel will be responsible for the players' selection for the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy tournament, another panel, also headed by Harvinder, has been directed to select squads for Bihar's Under-16, Under-9 and Under-23 teams. Former Punjab all-rounder Krishan Mohan and former Gujarat wicketkeeper Pathik Patel are the two other members, who will select players for the age division tournaments under the guidance of Harvinder.
A source close to the development claimed that all of the selectors have already reached Patna to start the selection process. The selection will be through trials at the Moin-ul-Haq Stadium in Patna. Through the trials, the panel members will choose the local talents.
"All the selectors reached Patna on Monday. They will select the talented players from among the local cricketers at the Moin-ul-Haq Stadium in Patna," a source tracking the development, informed the media house.
BCCI did the same in 2025
It is also important to mention that BCCI did the same ahead of the previous domestic season. For the selection of Bihar's cricket teams, the board formed a panel with former India chief selectors Chetan Sharma, Harvinder Singh, Salil Ankola and Neetu David. Harvinder Singh is the only one who is named in this year's committee after gaining experience with the previously formed committee last year.
Since the emergence of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Bihar cricket has gained a lot of attention from the cricket fans. This year, their cricket team will start their Ranji Trophy campaign against Uttar Pradesh in Rajgir. In the group stage, they will face Baroda, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Jammu and Kashmir, Vidarbha, and Puducherry in their following fixtures.
