Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) IPL 2026 campaign ended in the worst possible way as they were completely outplayed by Gujarat Titans (GT) in their last IPL 2026 match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. They suffered a massive 89-run defeat against GT on May 21.
This game turned out emotional for the CSK fans as MS Dhoni didn’t return for this game as well, missing the entire IPL 2026 season because of calf and thumb injuries. It was the first time in his 19-year IPL career that Dhoni was sidelined for the whole season.
IPL Governing Council Punishes CSK after crushing loss to GT
Well, after the crushing defeat against the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad, the Chennai Super Kings team was also hit with strict punishment from the IPL Governing Council.
As if the loss and playoff exit were not enough, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and his players were handed the massive fines.
The IPL Governing Council punished Chennai Super Kings for maintaining a slow overrate during the IPL 2026 clash against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad. Since it was CSK’s second over-rate offense of the season, Ruturaj Gaikwad was hit with a heavy fine of Rs 24 lakh.

Ruturaj Gaikwad and the entire CSK squad handed heavy fines
Not only the captain but also the entire playing XI and even the impact player were also punished by the IPL authorities. They were fined Rs 6 lakh, or 25 percent of their match fees.
The IPL said in an official media release: “Ruturaj Gaikwad, captain, Chennai Super Kings, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match 66 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against the Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
As this was his team’s second offense (first offense in Match 18) of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offenses, Gaikwad was fined INR 24 lakhs. The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, will be fined either INR six lakhs or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser.”

Chennai Super Kings humiliated by Gujarat Titans as their IPL 2026 campaign ends in disaster
Speaking about the match, Gujarat Titans piled up a massive 229/4 on the board, thanks to brilliant fifties from captain Shubman Gill (64 runs off 37 balls), Sai Sudharsan (84 runs off 53 balls), and Jos Buttler (unbeaten 57 off 27 balls) against Chennai Super Kings at home.
The chase turned into a nightmare for CSK. The star wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson was dismissed for a golden duck by Mohammed Siraj. After that, wickets kept falling regularly, and the Men in Yellow never looked in control during the chase.
Only Shivam Dube showed some fight with an attacking knock of 47 runs from just 17 balls. His power hitting was not enough, as the rest of the batting lineup could not ever face 15 deliveries and failed badly under pressure against the Titans on Thursday.
CSK eventually bowled out for 140 runs inside 14 overs, and this massive defeat officially ended their IPL 2026 campaign in disappointing fashion. They are currently sitting in seventh spot with 12 points from 14 games, and the remaining four league games could further push them down.
