BCCI-Virat Kohli Saga: Kirti Azad Feels Sourav Ganguly Should Have Learnt From His Own Example To Handle The Matter

Former Indian cricketer Kirti Azad feels that BCCI President Sourav Ganguly should have handled the matter of the BCCI-Kohli saga more professionally. Kirti Azad said that BCCI President should have talked to Virat Kohli much earlier about the latter’s ouster as ODI skipper.
BCCI recently appointed Rohit Sharma as the new ODI skipper for the national team. Virat Kohli gave up T20I captaincy after ICC T20 World Cup 2021. However, the board wanted to have a common captain for the limited-overs format and decided to remove Kohli from the ODI captaincy as well.

Sourav Ganguly Should Have Learnt From His Own Example: Kirti Azad
Former Indian cricketer and former BCCI selector Kirti Azad feels that Sourav Ganguly should have learnt from his own example and handled the matter more effectively. Sourav Ganguly was stripped of his captaincy in 2005 after a spat with coach Greg Chappell. He was also ousted from the national team.
“I remember how Bishan Bedi was dethroned, how Sunil Gavaskar was dethroned. Venkataraghavan was in his flight and when he landed, he was replaced as captain. At least, Sourav should have realised through his own experience.
“I remember I had defended him when Greg Chappell was coach and he was dropped as captain. He should have learnt from his own example and spoken to Virat much earlier. I am not saying Virat is a special case. Yes, he is a special batter and a special cricketer. He leads by example and leads by example,” Kirti Azad said.

Kiriti Azad also said that BCCI should have been a little more professional in the matter and informed Virat Kohli about his ouster as an ODI skipper well in advance. He also said that such matters should not come out in public.
“I feel that it should have been done in a more proper manner. BCCI should have been a little more professional on a cricketing front and with Sourav at the helm, especially when a former captain had tweeted about a rift, speculation that had been going on. These things should not come out in the public and a captain who has given so much, Virat Kohli, should have been informed well in advance,” Kirti Azad further said.
During a recent press conference, Virat Kohli mentioned that he was informed just one and a half-hour before the meeting that he has been removed as ODI skipper. Moreover, he also mentioned that Sourav Ganguly never asked him to not step down as a T20I skipper, opposite to what the BCCI President had claimed earlier.
