BCCI's ICC funding blocked amid Asia Cup 2025 tensions

Legendary batsman Brian Lara has expressed his disappointment over the state of West Indies cricket following the team's dismal loss to Australia in the recently concluded three-match Test series.

While the West Indies were the underdogs for the series, not many had expected them to perform so poorly in their backyard. Australia went on to whitewash the Caribbean outfit in the three-match series.

West Indies cricket is in dearth

West Indies' miseries were compounded by a disastrous batting display in the second innings of the third Test, where they were bowled out for just 27 runs.

27 is the second lowest score in Test history and worst since 1955 as Australia thrashed West Indies by 176 runs to complete a 3-0 series win.

West Indies managed to avoid the lowest Test score of all time by just 1 run. Mitchell Starc starred with the ball for Australia, taking 6 wickets for just 9 runs, while Scott Boland picked up a hat-trick.

BCCI blamed as Brian Lara opens up on West Indies cricket:

The dismal display against Australia has once again highlighted the crisis in West Indies cricket. As the team struggles to do well, Brian Lara has highlighted one of the main reasons behind it. The former West Indies captain pointed out that unlike the players in the past, the current players do not have any motivation to play for West Indies.

Speaking on Stick to Cricket podcast, Brian Lara stated that while players in the past used to toil hard in first-class cricket in order to get into the West Indies team, the modern players use the national team as a stepping stone to earn lucrative contracts.

"We played first-class cricket and some of us even played county cricket to try to get into the West Indies team. We are now using the West Indies team as a stepping stone, as a stage for us to get contracts. That is not a fault of the player," said Brian Lara.

David Lloyd calls for balance in ICC

Veteran commentator David Lloyd was quick to share his views as well, saying that the 'Big Three' of cricket - India, Australia and England - take all the money. He called for a more even distribution of the revenue in order to help other teams thrive too.

"The Big Three, that can't be right. They take all the money. England, Australia, India take all the money. They get the big broadcast deals. You have got to have a more even distribution to allow West Indies, New Zealand, Sri Lanka to compete," said Lloyd.
