Mumbai Indians (MI) opener Rohit Sharma failed to convert his start into a big score against Delhi Capitals (DC) during the ongoing IPL 2026 season. The former MI skipper was left disappointed after Nitish Rana completed a smart catch at extra cover at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Saturday, April 4.
Delhi Capitals skipper Axar Patel chose to bowl first after winning the toss and made an early impact with the ball. Mukesh Kumar struck in the third over, removing Ryan Rickelton and Tilak Varma to put MI under pressure. However, Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav built a partnership for the third wicket.
Nitish Rana Takes Sharp Catch to Dismiss Rohit Sharma Off Axar Patel
Delhi Capitals broke a partnership when Axar Patel dismissed Rohit Sharma for 35 off 26 balls during the 10th over. Rohit had built a 53-run stand but could not continue after mistiming an attacking shot.
Axar bowled a slightly slower delivery wide outside off, inviting a big hit. Rohit tried to play an aggressive shot but failed to get elevation, sending the ball straight towards cover.
Nitish Rana reacted quickly, timing his jump perfectly to complete a sharp catch above his head. The wicket ended Mumbai Indians’ momentum and brought Sherfane Rutherford to the crease.

Rohit Sharma Breaks MS Dhoni’s Record for Most Sixes Against a Single IPL Team
Rohit Sharma reached a major milestone after hitting a six off Vipraj Nigam in the seventh over, which took his tally to 51 sixes against Delhi Capitals. He went past MS Dhoni’s record of 50 sixes against Royal Challengers Bengaluru to become the Indian batter with the most sixes against a single IPL team.
Rohit has 51 sixes in 38 IPL matches against Delhi Capitals. Dhoni has 50 sixes in 38 matches against Royal Challengers Bengaluru while representing Chennai Super Kings and Rising Pune Super Giants.
Chris Gayle is at the top spot with 61 sixes against Punjab Kings in 16 matches. He also has 54 sixes in 19 matches against Kolkata Knight Riders. Virat Kohli is fifth on the list with 48 sixes in 35 matches against Chennai Super Kings.
Rohit Sharma Moves to Top of Orange Cap List
The Mumbai batter moved to the top of the run-scorers list. He scored 78 in the first match, followed by 35 against Delhi Capitals. With a total of 113 runs, Rohit holds a 5-run lead over Cooper Connolly in the race for the Orange Cap.
The 38-year-old, who now plays only ODIs in international cricket, has shown improved fitness and form. He smashed 78 off 38 balls against Kolkata Knight Riders, including six fours and six sixes, and played a key role in Mumbai Indians chasing down 221.
That victory was significant for Mumbai Indians, as it marked their first opening-match win since 2012. They completed the chase of 221 with six wickets and five balls remaining, which was also their highest successful chase in IPL history.
