VVS Laxman, the head of the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and the legendary Indian batter, is currently serving as India’s coach for the ongoing five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe. Actually, Rahul Dravid’s tenure as Team India’s head coach ended with the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 triumph.
With the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) yet to announce the appointment of the new head coach of the Indian cricket team, they requested Laxman to accompany the young Indian brigade on the Zimbabwe tour, for which they are paying the batting legend an impressive sum.
VVS Laxman serves as Team India coach on Zimbabwe tour after Rahul Dravid's resignation
Notably, Dravid led the Indian cricket team for over two and a half years, during which he made significant contributions to the team's development. His tenure as head coach culminated with Team India clinching its second T20 World Cup title after 17 years, as Dravid finished his term on a high note.
The former Indian captain assumed the role of head coach in November 2021, which was initially scheduled to finish after the 2023 ODI World Cup. However, the BCCI extended his contract until the recent T20 World Cup in 2024. However, he was asked to reapply for the high-profile job, but he has decided to step down from his position to spend time with his family.
Now, VVS Laxman is fulfilling India's head coach’s role on a temporary basis for the Zimbabwe tour, and he is accompanied by his support staff from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for the five-match T20I series.
Well, the BCCI is likely to formally announce Gautam Gambhir's appointment as head coach soon, which means Laxman will oversee coaching duties for only five T20I matches. Gambhir, the former Indian batter and 2011 World Cup winner, is reportedly set to receive a huge remuneration for taking over from Dravid as head coach.
VVS Laxman to earn 4% of Rahul Dravid’s annual salary for coaching India on Zimbabwe tour
However, Dravid was also getting a hefty amount of INR 12 crore from the BCCI for his services as head coach. Well, Laxman has been paid very little for his services on the Zimbabwe tour as compared to Dravid’s annual salary.
The NCA head will be reportedly paid INR 10 lakhs per match during India’s tour of Zimbabwe, which got underway on Saturday, July 6, with the five-match T20I series opener in Harare.
According to media reports, VVS Laxman is expected to earn 50 lakhs as his salary for coaching the young India cricket team during their white-ball tour of Zimbabwe. This amount is approximately 4.16% of Dravid's annual salary of INR 12 crore.
Notably, Laxman has worn the coach’s hat many times during Dravid’s tenure as India’s head coach, and he was expected to replace his former teammate, but the NCA head refused to throw his hat for the top job, considering the amount of time the coach has to spend away from home. The Indian coach spends at least 10 months of a year with the national team.
