According to the latest reports, Suryakumar Yadav's spot as India's T20I captain is under threat with the emergence of Shubman Gill, and he could be sacked sooner rather than later.
Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee and India head coach Gautam Gambhir want to groom Shubman Gill as the next T20I captain, and his inclusion in India's Asia Cup 2025 squad as vice-captain was the start of the process.
Shubman Gill makes T20I comeback, gets leadership role
Gill is going through a golden run in his cricket career and is groomed to become the next poster boy of Indian cricket after the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
He showcased his talent to the world at a very young age, and at 25, Gill seems fully mature to take Indian cricket forward. In his first stint as Test captain, Gill helped India draw the series 2-2 in England, scoring 754 runs at an average of 75.40.
Currently, he is the vice-captain in ODIs and T20Is, and once he takes over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav, he would aim to take India to new heights.
Overall, Gill has played 37 Tests for India and has scored 2647 runs at an average of 41.35. In 55 ODI games, he has scored 2775 runs at an average of 59.04, and in 21 T20I games, he has scored 578 runs at an average of 30.42 and a strike rate of 139.27.
Shubman Gill was not the first choice, but is set to be groomed as the next India T20I skipper
According to a report in the Indian Express, the BCCI selectors and Gautam Gambhir are keen to groom Shubman Gill as the next T20I captain because Suryakumar Yadav will turn 35 next month.
Discussions regarding this matter took place during the Asia Cup squad selection meeting, and it "consumed most of the time" before Gill was identified as the "most eligible candidate".
"It was the matter that consumed most of the time at Tuesday’s selection meeting and head coach Gautam Gambhir, who joined online, was also of the view that India needs to groom someone for the future and Gill, who turns 26 next month, was the most eligible candidate," the report read.

As per the same report, all-rounder Axar Patel, who was India's vice-captain in the England T20I series, was looked at as a possible captaincy option, and Gill was not the first choice.
However, the selectors zeroed in on Shubman Gill because they needed someone who could serve Indian cricket for a long time, and there was no better candidate than Gill.
Shubman Gill now breathing down Suryakumar Yadav's neck
Another report in PTI claimed that the BCCI has sent a clear message to Suryakumar Yadav with Gill's appointment as vice-captain that he needs to step up his game.
The former World No.1 batter Suryakumar Yadav last scored a T20I fifty in October 2024 against Bangladesh, and since then, his numbers in T20I cricket have been extremely poor. However, he looked in remarkable form in IPL 2025, scoring 717 runs.
At the press conference, Suryakumar Yadav and Ajit Agarkar were asked about Gill being seen as an all-format captain in the foreseeable future.
"Ye sawal aap ke liye hai (this question is for you),” Suryakumar replied on a lighter note, asking Agarkar to answer.
“I can discuss T20 cricket with you right now, and (in) Test cricket he (Gill) is already leading,” Agarkar said. “Like Surya mentioned (before), he was vice-captain the last time he played T20 cricket for India. We obviously see some leadership qualities in him, and his form in England was what we were hoping for,” added the former India pacer.
