Ben Stokes ruled out for the remainder of England's summer; Ollie Pope to lead England in Sri Lanka Tests

England Test captain Ben Stokes will miss the remainder of the English summer due to a hamstring injury sustained during The Hundred Men's Competition 2024. Ben Stokes will not play in the upcoming three-match Test series against Sri Lanka, and Ollie Pope will lead the national cricket team in his absence.

Ben Stokes sustained a left hamstring injury while playing for the Northern Superchargers against the Manchester Originals in The Hundred on Sunday, August 11. The left-handed batter walked off the field after completing a single. He was later seen with crutches following the Northern Superchargers' win.

Ben Stokes Has Been Ruled Out For The Rest Of The Summer

On Tuesday, August 13. the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed that Stokes will miss the remainder of the English summer due to a torn left hamstring.

"England Men's Test Captain Ben Stokes has been ruled out for the rest of the summer after tearing his left hamstring while playing for Northern Superchargers in The Hundred on Sunday. As a result of the scans conducted in Leeds on Tuesday, Stokes will miss England's three-match Rothesay Test series against Sri Lanka, which begins at Emirates Old Trafford on Wednesday, 21 August," the board said in a release.

England will face Sri Lanka in a three-match Test series, with the first match set to be played at the Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester from August 21-25. The teams will then play at Lord’s in London, starting on August 29. The third match will be played at the Kennington Oval in London from September 6.

Ben Stokes Is Aiming To Return For Test Tour Of Pakistan - ECB

The ECB didn't name a replacement for Stokes for the Test series against Sri Lanka. The board highlighted that Stokes is aiming to return for England's Test tour of Pakistan in October.

"There will be no addition to the squad for this series. The all-rounder is aiming to return for England's winter Test tour of Pakistan, scheduled to start in early October. The tour includes three Test matches in Multan, Karachi, and Rawalpindi."

Ollie Pope will take over as England's captain for the Test series against Sri Lanka. The ECB appointed Pope as the stand-in captain for the upcoming home series.

Stokes will miss his first Test series since becoming England's captain. The 33-year-old last missed a Test series due to mental health issues during India's tour of England in 2021. Ollie Pope will lead the England national cricket team in the upcoming series. This will be his first stint as England captain.

Ollie Pope was England's second-highest run scorer during the recent Test series against the West Indies at home. The right-handed batter scored 239 runs in four innings at an average of 59.75, with a best score of 121. However, he scored only 35 runs in five innings for the London Spirit in The Hundred.
