The changing political situation in Bengal could affect the leadership structure within the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), affecting Sourav Ganguly. According to a report by The Telegraph India, the state elections and shifting internal power dynamics have raised concerns about the smooth continuation of key projects and alliances.

The annual general meeting of the state cricket association is scheduled for September 2026. However, elections could be held earlier, as at least two key office-bearers are set to step down before completing their official terms, which may force authorities to adjust the existing administrative timeline.

An administrative source tracking these developments told The Telegraph India that some previously sidelined individuals are preparing to regain influence. The report noted that observers may need to wait at least a month to understand how the situation unfolds.

“These are early days. Let’s wait for at least a month and see what transpires. But one thing is clear, that people who have been forced to stay in the background will emerge stronger,” a source told The Telegraph on Monday evening.

The report added that the current administration under Sourav Ganguly is seen as closely aligned with the ruling Trinamool setup. It further suggested that potential political changes could lead to major shifts within the association, with all three top posts possibly heading for elections.

CAB Tensions Resurface Over Bengal Premier League Dispute

The report added that a major leadership clash was narrowly avoided during the previous election cycle after a late compromise. The tension mainly arose from disagreements over the proposed Bengal Premier League structure.

During the 2025 annual general meeting, current president Sourav Ganguly and former administrator Avishek Dalmiya were close to contesting for the top post. Dalmiya later stepped down from his IPL governing council role after facing criticism over his alleged closeness to the ruling group.

The report further added that Secretary Bablu Koley is nearing the 70-year age limit, while Joint Secretary Madan Mohan Ghosh is completing his nine-year tenure. It also mentioned that discussions are ongoing about Vice-President Nitish Ranjan Dutta and whether he has crossed the prescribed age limit.

Sourav Ganguly Faces Toughest CAB Test As Eden Gardens Project And Leadership Future Come Under Focus

The report further noted that Sourav Ganguly is facing one of his toughest administrative challenges. It questioned whether he could retain his core team to complete the ongoing Eden Gardens renovation project he initiated.

Ganguly previously served as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India from 2019 to 2022 before returning to lead the Cricket Association of Bengal. He had earlier held the CAB president role between 2015 and 2019, building a strong administrative track record.

During his playing career, Ganguly scored over 11,000 ODI runs and 7,212 Test runs. His leadership in the early 2000s played a key role in shaping a more aggressive and confident Indian team, especially in overseas conditions.
