Bengaluru is all set for a major upgrade after the tragic stampede, as the city will soon have a world-class cricket stadium with a capacity of 80,000 fans. The Karnataka government has approved plans for a huge INR 1,650 crore sports complex in Surya City, Bommasandra.
It will be the second-largest cricket stadium in India, behind only the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The Karnataka government took this move after a heartbreaking incident. On June 4, 2025, celebrations for Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL title win turned into chaos when a stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium claimed 11 lives.
Karnataka Govt approves India’s second-largest cricket stadium
The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, which has a crowd capacity of 32,000 and is built on 17 acres, was found unsuitable for big events in a report by the Justice John Michael Cunha Commission. The report called for larger, safer venues with better parking and crowd control.

Even the Maharaja Trophy 2025 was moved to Mysuru after police refused permission for the tournament to be held in Bengaluru. Now, there are doubts over whether the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium will host the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 matches later this year or even IPL 2026 games.
The Karnataka Housing Board (KHB) will build a 100-acre sports hub in Bengaluru’s southern outskirts to ensure such tragedies never happen again. It will be an international-standard cricket stadium for 80,000 people in Surya City, Bommasandra.
The complex will also include:
Eight indoor and eight outdoor sports arenas
Modern gyms and training centers
Olympic-sized swimming pools
Guest houses, hostels, and hotels
A convention hall for global events
Interestingly, the entire project will be funded by the Karnataka Housing Board (KHB) itself, highlighting the state government’s commitment to creating a safe and world-class venue to avoid incidents like the Bengaluru stampede in the future.
Big moment for Bengaluru Cricket
Bengaluru has a proud cricketing history, producing legends like Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble, as well as the modern-era star KL Rahul. It is also home to the BCCI’s National Cricket Academy (NCA) and BCCI Centre of Excellence (COE).
The new stadium will help them to secure top international games, IPL matches, and major tournaments. If everything goes to plan, the Surya City sports complex could be ready by the end of 2029.

While Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium remains the largest stadium in India, the new Bengaluru stadium will outsize iconic venues like Kolkata’s Eden Gardens (68,000).
Karnataka Govt submits stampede inquiry report to High Court
Recently, the Karnataka government handed the High Court a copy of the Justice John Michael Cunha inquiry commission report on the tragic June 4 stampede outside M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. A division bench led by Justice Jayant Banerji reviewed the report and decided to continue the hearing on Monday.
The court gave this time so that the lawyer for the petitioner, DNA Entertainment Private Limited, could get clear instructions from their client. The court also raised a specific question—whether the people who gave statements to the commission on behalf of the event management company were officially authorized to do so.
