India National Cricket Team pacer Akash Deep might not have a long international career at the Test level. As per the reports in the Telegraph, it is learned that the speedster might not be able to cement his place in the longest format of the game.
India National Cricket Team fast bowler Akash Deep was the most unlucky pacer for the team in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. The Bengal fast bowler missed the first two games of the series against the Australia National Cricket Team and then replaced Harshit Rana for the third game at the Gabba in Brisbane.
Akash Deep bowled his heart out in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25
Akash bowled his heart out and ane even troubled Australia National Cricket Team batters but couldn't back it up with the wickets. The luck, too, didn't favor him as there were catches dropped off his bowling as well.
Akash Deep even hit batters on the pads, but again, the luck wasn't on his side as the 'umpire's call' went against him. To worsen the case for him, the fast bowler got injured after the fourth Test and was ruled out of the last match of the series at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney.
Akash was replaced by Prasidh Krishna, who did a great job for the team and straightaway was among the wickets. With not many wickets against his name and also him getting injured, there have been many speculations about his future with the India National Cricket Team.
If he’s in and out (of the XI) at his age, that could go on to be the difference - BCCI official on Akash Deep
A BCCI official pointed out Akash Deep's poor bowling in Melbourne, saying that if he is in and out of the team, then things will be difficult for him. He added that the fast bowler also has been managing a dodgy back, which also won't work in his favor.
"In Melbourne, he was sometimes pitching it either too short or too fall. Besides, given his age, if he’s in and out (of the XI) at his age, that could go on to be the difference,” a BCCI official told The Telegraph on Monday. “And then, he has a dodgy back which has been troubling him even before his Bengal debut (in 2019). That’s also another thing he has to look after.”
He will learn that in Test cricket, you get nothing on a platter - Sourasish Lahiri on Akash Deep
Former Bengal off-spinner Sourasish Lahiri also talked about Akash Deep's performances in Australia, saying that although he beat the bat but his length wasn't ideal for picking wickets on Australian pitches. He said:
“Initially, he was bowling back-of-a-length. But then, he didn’t take much time to find the right length: that six to eight-metre length which makes the batter think whether to play on the front or back foot,”
"With his fast arm action, he bowled the stock ball (the one coming into the batter) quite well, troubling Steve Smith at the MCG. Yes, there were several plays and misses off his bowling. But this helps to boost your perseverance and makes you mentally stronger. He will learn that in Test cricket, you get nothing on a platter.”
