In a huge blow for the Punjab Kings (PBKS), the star Australia National Cricket Team all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been ruled out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
The development was officially confirmed by the Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain, Shreyas Iyer, on Wednesday, April 30, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Very sad to miss out Glenn Maxwell, who has a fractured finger - Shreyas Iyer
Speaking to Danny Morrison at the CSK vs PBKS toss, Shreyas Iyer revealed that Glenn Maxwell has fractured a finger, which will keep him out of the entire Indian Premier League 2025. Shreyas Iyer further revealed that they have not yet decided on a replacement for the Australian all-rounder. He said:
"Very sad to miss out Glenn Maxwell, who has a fractured finger. We haven't decided on the replacement so far. Yeah, we are probably sticking to our last playing XI. Not sure what the changes are. But the majority of the players are there."
Glenn Maxwell was among the eight overseas players that the Punjab Kings (PBKS) acquired at the Indian Premier League 2025 mega auction.
Other players who were roped in by the Punjab-based franchise were Marcus Stoinis, Marco Jansen, Azmatullah Omarzai, Josh Inglis, Lockie Ferguson, Aaron Hardie, and Xavier Bartlett.
Glenn Maxwell struggled in IPL 2025
Maxwell featured in seven matches in the Indian Premier League 2025 against the Gujarat Titans, Lucknow Super Giants, Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Kolkata Knight Riders.
In those matches, he returned with scores of 30, 1, 3, 7, and 7. Overall, he scored just 48 runs at an average of 8 and a strike rate of 97.95, with him playing 47% of dot balls.
He got to play these many matches in the tournament mainly because of his spin-bowling ability, but he was not able to make any major contribution with the ball as well.
Overall, he bowled 78 balls and conceded 110 runs while picking up four wickets at an average of 27.50, an economy of 8.46, and a strike rate of 19.5.
Our preparations have been intact - Shreyas Iyer
Meanwhile, the Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer further said at the toss that they will focus on their process rather than thinking about the victory against the Chennai Super Kings.
Shreyas Iyer added that they were quite unfortunate not to get two points in their previous match against the Kolkata Knight Riders, which was washed out at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. He elaborated:
"We are bowling first. Yeah, we have to win. But rather than focusing on it, we are going to trust and go ahead with the process.
"Unfortunately, due to bad weather, we couldn't get the required points from the last game. Our preparations have been intact. Boys are in high spirits and looking forward to a great game."
Notably, Punjab Kings made two changes to their Playing XI for the match against the Chennai Super Kings, with Prabhsimran Singh and Glenn Maxwell making way for Harpreet Brar and Suryansh Shedge. Prabhsimran Singh is set to be used as an impact player when it is PBKS' turn to chase.
