A major controversy has erupted involving the family members of Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami. As reported by PTI, Mohammed Shami’s sister, her mother-in-law, and several other relatives have been accused of being part of a fraud related to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA).

The scandal came to light after a district-level investigation revealed fraudulent disbursement of MNREGA wages in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh. The center of the scam is Gule Ayesha, the mother-in-law of Shami’s sister and the current village head, as confirmed by the authorities.

District Magistrate Nidhi Gupta Vats confirmed that a preliminary investigation revealed fraudulent wage payments to 18 individuals who reportedly did not perform any work under the MNREGA scheme but received their wages in their bank accounts.

The concerned individuals include Shami’s sister Shabina, her husband Ghaznavi, and three brothers-in-law—Aamir Suhail, Nasruddin, and Shekhu—along with other family members of the village head Gule Ayesha.

The investigation found that fake entries were made in MNREGA job cards starting from January 2021, and wages continued to be deposited in their bank accounts up to August 2024-25 without doing any labor.

DM orders to freeze the bank accounts of the Gram Pradhan

The DM was quoted as saying by PTI, “The investigation by local officials revealed that 18 individuals received MNREGA wages without performing any work. Among those implicated are Mohammed Shami's sister Shabina, Shabina's husband Ghaznavi, Shabina's three brothers-in-law Aamir Suhail, Nasruddin, and Shekhu, along with sons and daughters of village head Gule Ayesha.”

Following these revelations, the District Magistrate has ordered the suspension of implicated workers and registered a formal police complaint and departmental action under the Panchayati Raj Act. Additionally, the authorities have ordered the recovery of misappropriated funds and the freezing of the bank accounts of the Gram Pradhan.

Investigations are ongoing, with officials also looking into the involvement of the Village Development Officer (VDO), Assistant Programme Officer (APO), operator, and others connected to the Gram Pradhan.

Mohammed Shami's Sunrisers Hyderabad struggles in the IPL 2025

Meanwhile, Mohammed Shami is currently playing in the ongoing IPL 2025, where he is plying his trade for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). After a long injury break, Shamu made a strong comeback to international cricket during the home series against England earlier this year.

Shami played a crucial role in India’s historic ICC Champions Trophy 2025 triumph after missing the T20 World Cup title glory last year due to injury. The victory marked India’s first Champions Trophy win in 12 years. He was also instrumental in India’s 2019 ODI World Cup final journey.

Now, the Indian pacer is focusing on bringing Sunrisers Hyderabad’s IPL 2025 campaign back on track, as the Orange Army suffered back-to-back defeats in the tournament after a dominant victory over Rajasthan Royals in their first match in Hyderabad last month.

The fans will see the repeat of the IPL 2024 final on April 3, as Sunrisers Hyderabad is all set to take on the defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata in their next clash.
