Former New Zealand opener Brendon McCullum is set to remain as the head coach of the England cricket team even after their lackluster performances in the high-profile tournaments in the recent past. After the exit from the semifinals of the T20 World Cup 2026, there were doubts over the coach’s future with the national side.
According to a recent report published by The Telegraph Sport, Brendon McCullum has secured his job after talks with Test skipper Ben Stokes. It was reported that the head coach and the skipper were not on the same page because of a disastrous Ashes series, where the hosts, Australia, thrashed England by 4-1.

The relationship between Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes came under scrutiny as soon as the red-ball captain criticized their game plan openly in front of the media, which was directly pointed towards the coach. Under the guidance of the former keeper-batter, England invented ‘Bazzball’, a fearless brand of cricket in every format of the game.
Brendon McCullum’s ‘Bazzball’ was entertaining on the field as the batters were allowed to go attacking under any circumstances. Despite the approach, the team failed again and again to fetch the expected results in the elite contests. Lack of positive results resulted in uncertainty over the head coach’s future.
“I think that we are now playing against teams who have answers to the style of cricket that we have been playing over quite a long period of time now,” Stokes publicly said this during the Ashes tour, criticizing Brendon McCullum.
The relationship improved as Stokes backed the coach
Later, the skipper also assured that the coach will not lose his job because of The Ashes result, as they lacked in performances and preparations as well.
“I do expect him to be (coach), but it’s not my decision. I absolutely love working with ‘Baz’. He’s a great man, and he’s a very, very, very good coach. There’s a lot more that goes on behind the scenes that he’ll never let out, so he’s got my full support. He’s a very, very good coach,” Ben Stokes told the media in support of the coach.
ECB completed its review: Report
According to a Hindustan Times report, Final talks between McCullum and Stokes were held this week, as the ECB also completed its review. The former New Zealand player also accepted changes from the ECB bosses. Performance director Ed Barney will take on a more significant role and oversee the selection of new coaching staff.
In the T20 World Cup 2026, England crashed out of the title race after being defeated by India in the semi-finals, in a high-scoring and close-fought contest. After the tournament, multiple former cricketers went against McCullum and asked the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to appoint a new coach as well.
A few days ago, it was speculated that the former England batter Kevin Pietersen could be the successor to the team. If the recent reports are to be believed, then McCullum has saved his job for now.
