Brendon McCullum To Step Down As KKR Coach After IPL 2022 To Take Over England Test Coach Role

Kolkata Knight Riders head coach and former captain of the New Zealand national team, Brendon McCullum has informed KKR that he would be stepping down from his position after this season to take up the job with the English National Team.

Several reports in the British media have suggested that McCullum has emerged as the top contender to coach the English men’s Test team.

Brendon McCullum has been the head coach of KKR for three years.

Brendan McCullum Informed Of His Decision To The Franchise In A Team Meeting

As per Indian Express, the former Kolkata Knight Riders player informed the team about his decision recently in a team meeting. McCullum as many would know lit the IPL on fire with his swashbuckling 158 runs in the first game in the inaugural edition of the competition.

“He informed us that he won’t be part of KKR going ahead as he will be taking up a job as England cricket team coach. He informed us during a team meeting a few days ago,” a KKR insider said.

McCullum has been a surprise candidate in many ways as he wasn’t even in consideration as the likes of Justin Langer, Simon Katich and Ricky Ponting were in the fray. But now as things stand, a formal announcement of his appointment can be made anytime during this week.

If he is appointed as the coach, his first assignment will be against his home country New Zealand who are due to play a Test series in England beginning from June 2. He will be working alongside New Zealand born New English Men’s Test team captain Ben Stokes. This will for the first time he will work for the longer version of the game as till now he has only been associated with T20 sides which also includes Tribago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League.
