Ricky Ponting can be described in two simple words- “Rigorous but Powerful”. It is not wrong to say that Ricky Ponting was an aggressive skipper on the field but his aggressive captaincy allowed him to make Australia a dominating team to take them to new heights.
From the early 2000s to 2010s, Australia ruled ODI cricket and won two ODI World Cups under Ponting's captaincy. He followed the legacy of former skipper Steve Waugh who led the Australian to the 1999 ODI World Cup title. Later, Ricky Ponting won the next two to make it three in three for Australia.
Ricky Ponting is a former right-handed batsman who used to bat in the top order. He was among the best batters of his time with Sachin Tendulkar and held the record for the second-most number of international tons. However, he was overtaken by Virat Kohli in recent years.
Early and Personal Life
Ricky Ponting was born in Launceston City in Tasmania State in December 1974. His father Graeme Ponting was a cricketer while his mother Lorraine was a vigoro player. He grew up with his sister Renee and brother Drew.
Ponting married his longtime girlfriend Rianna Jennifer Cantor and the couple has three children- daughters Emmy Charlotte and Matisse Ellie and son Fletcher William. He left school after 10th standard but later underwent sports education in Launceston city.
Domestic Career
Ricky Ponting's first break in domestic cricket was in 1992 when he was selected for the Tasmania State Team. He was just 17 years old at that time and became the youngest player to feature in the Tasmania team.
However, he played cricket for three years in the domestic circuit before making his international debut. He played for Tasmania- his domestic club- from 1992 till the end of his retirement in 2013. He also represented the English County Club Somerset in 2004.
International Career
Ricky Ponting made his international debut in February 1995 with an ODI game against South Africa. Later, he went on to make his debut in all three formats and became a regular member in all three formats. Hence, the right-handed batsman tasted immense success after just three years of his domestic career.
Although Ponting was not too active in T20Is- 17 games in total- he played 375 ODIs and 168 Tests during his career. At an average of 51+ in Tests and 42+ in ODI, he retired as the second-highest run-getter in international cricket. He smacked a total of 71 tons during his career- 41 in ODIs and 30 in Tests.
Franchise Career
Ricky Ponting played just 17 T20Is for Australia, however, he was quite active in franchise T20 leagues. For instance, he played a few seasons in the Indian Premier League, Big Bash League, and Caribbean Premier League.
He was part of Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2008, Mumbai Indians in IPL 2013, and Antigua Hawksbills in CPL 2013. He had a short stay in the Indian Premier League but also led the Mumbai Indians franchise for a short period.
Legacy
Call him an aggressive skipper on the field or the inventor of sledding in cricket, however, Ricky Ponting will always be remembered as a brilliant batsman and stunning skipper who led Australia to two back-to-back ODI World titles in 2003 and 2007.
Ponting is the best skipper on win percentage for Australia as well as international cricket. For instance, Australia was the unbeaten team in both ODI World Cup tournaments in 2003 and 2007.
