England’s white-ball head coach Matthew Mott has plenty of things to ponder over following defeats in 3 out of 4 limited-overs series against India and South Africa.

While India won both the ODI and T20I series 2-1, the Proteas snared the T20I series by the same margin while the ODIs ended in a 1-1 draw. It ends a winless home summer for England but Mott insisted there are stars who will be returning to the setup soon, most prominently the likes of Ben Stokes.

He will add plenty,” Mott said. “When you add players like Stokes into any team, it makes selection a hell of a lot easier. You’ve always got a basically a free hit with the balance of your team.”

Having a world-class bowler that’s in the top four is a huge asset to any team. So bringing him back will put a whole different slant on the way we are able to put our team together,” he added.

“But at certain times, hard decisions need to be made” – Matthew Mott

Asserting the need to start making tough calls on underperforming players, Mott said changes will be the need of the hour but the young guns in the team will get a longer run.

When you’ve been a great player, and you’ve delivered great things on a big stage, I think you deserve a bit of loyalty. And I’ve always believed that, in great teams, different types of players fire and they miss out.

You can hold that for a bit, and you get some currency from having delivered on the big stage – but at certain times, hard decisions need to be made,” he further noted.
