The Australia National Cricket Team is lined up for a two-match Test series against the South Africa National Cricket Team. This is a crucial series for both sides to maintain the top spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. Ahead of the first Test, Aussie all-rounder Cameron Green is likely to miss the game due to a strain.

Australia holds the top position in the WTC with 80 PCT, and South Africa is right below the Kangaroos with 75 PCT. This is a battle for the top spot in the current WTC cycle and is also crucial for the Aussies ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) in India early next year. The WTC reigning champions will look to qualify for the final.

Cameron Green ruled out of SA Test series

As per reports from the Sydney Morning Herald, it is believed that Cameron Green is out for the first Test match against South Africa after he picked up an abdominal strain during the third ODI between South Africa and Australia in Potchefstroom. Green did not take part in the warm-up match on Sunday as well.

Cameron Green only did physical conditioning and neither batted, bowled, nor fielded in the warm-up game in Potchefstroom. He has recently been struggling with lots of injuries, which have kept him out of the Test squad, and sometimes he has played only as a batter in the side. However, there has been no official confirmation that Cameron Green will be missing out on the first game.

Cooper Connolly to replace Cameron Green

Cooper Connolly has scored four runs in just one innings for the Aussies in the traditional format. He has bowled five overs, giving away 21 runs in two innings of the Test match he played against the Island Nation. It will be very interesting to see if Connolly gets a chance in the forthcoming series in South African conditions.

With Cameron Green likely to be out, it is believed that Punjab Kings (PBKS) all-rounder Cooper Connolly is set to replace him in the first Test. The 23-year–old cricketer has just played one Test match, which was back in 2025 in Galle against Sri Lanka. He has been superb for the side in the white-ball formats and has shown amazing form in recent times.

Liam Scott also in the fray

Apart from Connolly, Nic Maddinson and Sam Harper will be closer to selection, as they have been called up as the backup for Josh Inglis. Beau Webster, who contributed with bat and ball in the warm-up game, has previously played a role as backup for Green in the red-ball format.

The selectors can think about young all-rounder Liam Scott, who has performed strongly on the Australia A tour of India. In the warm-up game, Marnus Labuschagne got the much-needed confidence as he scored a hundred, with Steve Smith scoring a fifty.

The first of the three-match Test series is scheduled to take place on Friday 9th October at Kingsmead, Durban. South Africa won the ODI series 2-1 and will also look to win the Test series.
