Aussie all-rounder Cameron Green created history at the IPL 2026 auction after Kolkata Knight Riders secured him for ₹25.20 crore. Green joined the list of the costliest signings ever in the IPL and became the highest-priced overseas player, surpassing previous records held by Australia’s Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins.

The 26-year-old missed the previous season while recovering from back surgery. He made his IPL debut with the Mumbai Indians (MI) in 2023. The all-rounder scored 452 runs, including an unbeaten 100 off 47 balls, and picked up six wickets.

He was traded to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru the following season. Green finished with 255 runs and 10 wickets from 13 matches. However, he sparked bids from multiple franchises due to his all-round capabilities.

Kolkata Knight Riders Outbid Chennai Super Kings to Secure Cameron Green’s Services

Kolkata Knight Riders outbid Chennai Super Kings to secure Cameron Green’s services. The Australian all-rounder entered the auction with a base price of ₹2 crore, but his value skyrocketed as multiple teams joined the race.

The bidding began with the Mumbai Indians, followed by the Rajasthan Royals (RR), before KKR stepped in aggressively. Rajasthan and KKR pushed the price up in a tense duel until the Royals bowed out at ₹13.60 crore. CSK then entered the fray, setting up a fierce contest between the two champions.

In the end, KKR signed Green for ₹25.20 crore, making him the third most expensive player in IPL history, behind only Rishabh Pant (₹27 crore) and Shreyas Iyer (₹26.75 crore). KKR backed the 25-year-old as a long-term match-winner capable of contributing with bat, ball, and in the field.

Why Will Cameron Green Receive Only ₹18 Crore Despite Fetching ₹25.20 Crore?

Cameron Green attracted a much higher bid at the IPL auction, but he will receive a lower amount due to league rules. Under regulations set by the IPL governing council, overseas players can receive a maximum salary of ₹18 crore, regardless of how high the bidding goes.

The BCCI introduced this limit ahead of last year’s auction and has continued it for the mini-auction as well. Notably, the cap matches the top retention bracket from the previous mega auction, ensuring overseas players do not earn more than the highest permitted slab.

While Green will be paid only ₹18 crore, his franchise must still spend the entire bid amount from its auction purse. Any amount above the cap will be redirected to the BCCI’s player welfare fund. This restriction applies only to overseas players, not Indian cricketers.

Cameron Green Missed IPL 2025 Due to Back Injury

Since making his debut in 2023, the 26-year-old has represented the Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, scoring 707 runs and taking 16 wickets across 29 matches.

Kolkata Knight Riders are now looking at Green as a key figure to step into the role previously held by Andre Russell, who was released before the auction and has since retired. Russell will remain involved with the franchise as KKR’s power coach for the 2026 season.

At the auction, David Miller was also drawing bids before Delhi Capitals secured him. The IPL 2026 season is expected to begin on March 26, with the final likely scheduled for May 31.
