South Africa cricketer Ryan Rickelton took a stunning catch to get rid of Indian batter Virat Kohli in the first ODI of the three-match series at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi on Sunday, November 30. Kohli entertained the crowd with a sensational batting display but failed to stay until the end of India’s innings.

The right-handed batter reached his first century at home since 2023. He walked in early in the fourth over but instantly took control of the innings. Kohli shifted gears from the start. He began attacking the bowlers in the power play, which lifted India’s scoring rate and put pressure on the South African bowling attack.

Virat Kohli’s knock came to an end in the 43rd over. Kohli mistimed Nandre Burger's slower ball while trying to hit over the infield. The shot didn’t get the elevation, and Ryan Rickelton ran back from cover, kept his eyes on the ball, and completed an excellent catch over his shoulder before tumbling to the ground.

Virat Kohli Reaches 52nd ODI Hundred in Ranchi

Virat Kohli changed gears midway through the innings when India suddenly lost Rohit Sharma, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Washington Sundar in quick succession. With wickets falling around him, he held one end and eventually brought up his century in the 38th over by placing a boundary off Marco Jansen.

Kohli jumped in the air, roared, and punched his fist before kissing the locket he always wears. The moment was briefly interrupted when a fan ran onto the field and fell at his feet, but once the intruder was removed, Kohli composed himself and looked skyward with folded hands.

By reaching the landmark, Kohli moved past Sachin Tendulkar’s tally of 51 Test hundreds and became the player with the most centuries in a single international format.

Virat Kohli Puts India on Top With His Century Against South Africa

Rohit Sharma scored 57 runs off 51 balls, with the help of three sixes and five fours. However, Yashasvi Jaiswal (18 off 16), Ruturaj Gaikwad (8 off 14), and Washington Sundar (13 off 19) couldn’t make impactful contributions with the bat.

India entered the series without injured regulars Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, forcing changes to their usual lineup. South Africa also made adjustments, resting skipper Temba Bavuma and spinner Keshav Maharaj for the first ODI.

After being swept 0-2 in the Test series, India are eager to bounce back by taking the ODI series. The Champions Trophy 2025 winners are also looking to improve after a 1-2 loss to Australia in their last one-day assignment.
