Kaneez Tuskers all-rounder Chad Laycock produced a record-breaking performance against the Momentum Multiply Titans in the YesPlay Pro20 Cup on Tuesday, October 13. The 23-year-old claimed figures of six for 26, becoming the first bowler to take five wickets in one over in South African T20 cricket.
Despite Laycock's remarkable spell, the Tuskers lost by 21 runs in Pietermaritzburg. The Titans were restricted to 204 all out, but the hosts managed only 183 for six in reply. Chad Laycock scored 31 runs off 25 balls with the bat. The Titans extended their unbeaten run to six matches and remained at the top of Pool A.
Chad Laycock Takes Five Wickets in Historic Penultimate Over
The Titans were at 193 for four after 18 overs. Chad Laycock changed the course of their innings in the penultimate over. He first bowled Leus du Plooy before conceding two runs to Dayyaan Galiem off the second delivery.
Chad Laycock then claimed four wickets in four consecutive balls. Galiem was caught at long-on, Aphiwe Mnyanda lost his middle stump, and Janco Smit and Esosa Aihevba both had their off stumps knocked over.
He recorded figures of six for 26, surpassing Beuran Hendricks' previous best of six for 29 in the 2014 Pro20 Cup. Chad Laycock also became the first bowler to take four wickets off consecutive deliveries in South African T20 cricket and the fifth player overall to claim five wickets in one over in T20 cricket.
The other bowlers to achieve the five-wicket-over feat are Al-Amin Hossain in 2013, Abhimanyu Mithun in 2019, and Gede Priandana in 2025. South African-born New Zealand international Neil Wagner also took five wickets in an over during a first-class match in 2011, while Ireland's Curtis Campher claimed five wickets in five balls across two overs last year.
Titans Secure Victory Despite Sensational Bowling Display
The Titans' openers, Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Sinethemba Qeshile, shared a 112-run partnership. Pretorius smashed 81 off 36 balls, including 11 fours and three sixes, while Qeshile contributed 46 off 29 deliveries with seven fours.
Dewald Brevis added 33 off 24 balls before Bamanye Xenxe dismissed him. Chad Laycock then dismantled the lower order, but the damage caused by the top order had already given the Titans a competitive total.
The Tuskers responded through Michael Erlank, who top-scored with 56 off 33 balls, including three fours and four sixes. Jack Lees contributed 34, while Chad Laycock remained unbeaten on 31 off 25 deliveries. However, the hosts finished on 183 for six, falling 21 runs short.
Pro20 Cup Roundup: Lions and Dolphins Claim Victories
The DP World Lions defeated Eastern Cape Iinyathi by five runs at the DP World Wanderers Stadium to register their third win in five matches. Rassie van der Dussen top-scored with 44 off 32 balls, while Richard Seletswane added 24 as the Lions posted 138 in 20 overs.
Iinyathi recovered through an 82-run second-wicket partnership between Christiaan du Toit and Jason Niemand. However, the Lions regained control when du Toit, Michael Copeland, and Niemand departed in a cluster, with only five runs added during that spell. Iinyathi finished on 133 for six.
Meanwhile, the Hollywoodbets Dolphins retained top spot in Pool B after beating the North West Dragons by seven wickets in Potchefstroom. The Dragons made 144 for five, with Diego Rosier scoring 45 and Wihan Lubbe adding 35.
Bryce Parsons then anchored the Dolphins' chase with 60, while Jason Smith scored an unbeaten half-century to help them reach the target in 16 overs.
