Chennai Super Kings have been going through their worst ever phase in the history of IPL, having lost five games in a row in the ongoing season. Their latest defeat came against the defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders, at their home ground in Chennai.

On Friday, April 11, Chennai Super Kings suffered an eight-wicket loss to Kolkata Knight Riders in the 25th match of the ongoing IPL 2025 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. KKR successfully chased down CSK’s 104-run target in just 10.1 overs and jumped to the third spot in the points table.

Chennai Super Kings set unwanted records in the IPL

It was Chennai Super Kings’ biggest loss ever in IPL history in terms of balls remaining (KKR chased down the target with 59 balls to spare). Additionally, for the first time in their history, CSK has lost five matches in a row in the world’s biggest T20 extravaganza.

Shockingly, CSK has also lost three straight games at Chepauk in a single season for the first time in IPL history. Batting first, the five-time champions managed to score just 103 runs for 9 wickets, making it one of their lowest totals in IPL history.

KKR humiliate CSK at Chepauk

Their total of 103/9 is now the second-lowest total by any team at Chepauk, only behind Royal Challengers Bangalore’s 70 all out against CSK in 2019. It is also CSK’s second-lowest total ever in the IPL in the first innings. Their lowest total was 97 all out against the Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium in the 2022 season.

CSK’s third-lowest first innings total was 109 all out against the Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur in IPL 2008, while their 110/8 against Delhi in 2012 is their fourth-lowest first innings total. Additionally, CSK also set another unwanted record — six of their wickets fell to spin against the KKR, the most ever for them in a single IPL innings.

Sunil Narine becomes the second-highest wicket-taker against CSK in IPL

Meanwhile, KKR spinner Sunil Narine has surpassed Harbhajan Singh (26 wickets) and become the bowler with the most wickets against Chennai Super Kings in the IPL after Lasith Malinga, who leads the chart with 31 wickets at an economy rate of 7.23.

Narine now has 26 wickets against CSK with an impressive economy rate of 6.29. The mystery spinner’s tight, tricky spin has often troubled the Chennai batters, especially on turning pitches. Notably, after suffering a crushing defeat against KKR, Chennai slipped to the ninth spot in the points table with only two points, while SRH remained at the 10th spot with two points.

We have to accept the challenge: MS Dhoni on CSK's worst loss to KKR

After the embarrassing defeat at home, the skipper, MS Dhoni, stated, “It has been quite a few nights that have not gone our way. The challenge has been there; we have to accept the challenge. Today, I felt we did not have enough runs on the board.

It has been the case over there; when we bowled in the 2nd innings, it stopped a bit; today it did in the first innings. When you lose too many wickets, there is pressure, and with quality spinners, it is difficult. We never got any partnerships and a bit more partnerships; an application, and we would be fine.”
