Former England captain Michael Vaughan has criticized Mohammad Hafeez for his recent comments regarding Virat Kohli. The former Pakistan cricketer’s comments came after Kohli scored an unbeaten century against South Africa on Sunday (November 5).

Kohli starred with the bat as India thrashed South Africa by a record margin of 243 runs to make it eight wins from eight in the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. After India lost both of their star openers inside the first ten overs, Kohli led the charge with the bat. On a tough pitch, he showed remarkable patience and composure to guide India to a big total.

His knock, however, has divided opinions in the cricketing world. Kohli scored 101 runs off 121 balls with the help of 10 fours. In the last ten overs of the game, he managed to score only 26 runs from 26 balls and hit just two boundaries. Some believe that his approach was correct on the tough Eden Gardens pitch, while others believe that he should have been more aggressive at least towards the end of the innings.

And Mohammad Hafeez belongs to the second category. The former Pakistan skipper criticised the India batting mainstay for his approach in the death overs and called his knock selfish. Speaking to a local Pakistani TV channel, Hafeez said:

“I saw sense of selfishness in Virat Kohli’s batting and this happened for the third time in this World Cup. In the 49th over, he was looking to take a single to reach his own hundred and he didn’t put the team first’.

Michael Vaughan reacts to Mohammad Hafeez’s comments:

Mohammad Hafeez’s criticism of Virat Kohli has not gone down well with Michael Vaughan. The England great took to X to call out Hafeez for his comments and called it ‘utter nonsense’, writing:

“Come on @MHafeez22!!! India have hammered 8 teams playing great cricket ..@imVkohli now has 49 tons and his last was an anchor role innings on a tricky pitch .. His team won by over 200 !!!! This is utter nonsense ..”

Talking about Kohli’s campaign in the ongoing competition, he is currently the second highest run-scorer. The former India captain has scored 543 runs at an average of 109 with the help of 2 centuries and four fifties so far.
