Mitchell Marsh and Matt Short will not be available for the entire next season of SA20 2027, as Cricket Australia has denied providing the required No Objection Certificate (NOC).
On August 7, through an official press release, CA confirmed that both of the star cricketers will be available for the Big Bash League 2026-27 season. As the schedules of the BBL 2026-27 and SA20 clash briefly with each other, Mitchell Marsh and Matt Short will not be entirely available to play in South Africa's franchise league.

Ahead of CA's official release, it was confirmed that Marsh and Short would play in South Africa's franchise league as the two marquee signings. After Cricket Australia's announcement, the situation has turned drastically.
The pair of Aussie batters are all set to play in the SA20 for the first time in their professional cricket career. Australia's men's T20I captain Marsh is contracted to join Sunrisers Leeds. The SA20 season begins on January 17, 2027.
The previous night of the 2027 SA20 opener, Matt Short's Adelaide Strikers are scheduled to host Marsh's Perth Scorchers in both teams' final match of the BBL16 regular season.
Marsh and Short will only be available to play the opening game of the SA20 2027 league if both of the players' BBL franchises fail to qualify for the final of the Big Bash League. If both of their BBL teams qualify to play in the final of the Big Bash League, then they will not be free to take part in the SA20 match.
Matt Short has no Australian contract, but requires an NOC to play SA20
While Mitchell Marsh is the captain of Australia's T20I team, Matt Short's situation is different. He is among the Australian cricketers who are under an Australian national or state contract. As he has no available central contracts currently, he is allowed to play as a freelance cricketer.
But Cricket Australia has a particular rule for the players who are willing to play in any overseas league. All of the cricketers, whether they are contracted or freelance, require NOCs from Cricket Australia. Without an NOC from the board, none of the Aussie players are allowed to play in overseas franchise tournaments.
"Whether they are contracted to the relevant member or not, or whether they have retired from cricket or not," according to the Cricket Australia rule.
Mitchell Marsh is carrying red-hot form in franchise cricket
Marsh's arrival in the SA20 is considered a blockbuster move as he continues to maintain a red-hot form since making a comeback from an injury lay-off. Marsh was troubled by injury during the T20 World Cup campaign, but later, as soon as he recovered from the injury, he has been in good form with the bat.
In the previous season of the Indian Premier League for the Lucknow Super Giants, the top-order batter scored 563 runs at an average of 43. In his maiden run in England's The Hundred competition, the batter registered 290 runs in five innings for Sunrisers Leeds.
